So what is the best way to figure out if I would be allergic to a chinchilla or not before ever actually getting one? I don't know anyone personally with a chinchilla.

Usually it is not the chinchilla people are allergic to but rather their dust, hay, and/or wooden shavings.

^ very true.
Theirs a lot of things you can do to reduce exposer if you find out you are allergic to something tho. Air filters, dust masks (for dusting, feeding hay), limiting exposer to certain elements that make you react.

Maybe find a rescue or breeder in your area and ask if you could come over to see and hold a chin. We have people come here every so often that think they want to get a chin, but first and foremost, want to be sure they're not allergic. So, we have them come over, hold a chin and see how they do.

You could also go to a petstore and ask to hold a chin.

We've actually run into two people lately that were fine around the hay, dust, shavings, but hand them a chin and they start sneezing and getting watery eyes and all. So, not too common to be allergic to the chin itself, but it is possible.
