I found out I can get a 50 pound bag of Tradition chinchilla feed for $19.

I only have two chinchillas, and there's no way we could go through that before it expires.

I know some people freeze their food, but then I heard it's dangerous because when you thaw it, it can develop mold.

How could I store this food safely? Or would I be better off just giving the extra away?

Yep, an air tight container in a cool, dark area will keep it the freshest. However, even with that you should only use the food until it is maybe about 6 months old or so and then get rid of it. If you can find someone, who could split the bag with you, that would be ideal.

Freezing can cause issues with mold, definitely stay away from that method of storage.

I buy 25 lb bags for my one chinchilla and store it in a dog feed rubbermaid container with a flip top from walmart. It seals to keep the food fresh and doesn't let any of the smell seep out.
