Just an update...Panacur ate half her pellets last night and she's munching on hay this morning. Hopefully she will keep on the road to recovery.

She was on the antibiotics, that's a good thing. I'm so sorry. Some vets are just stupid... :( Are you feeling a little better now? It's not a good feeling to be that angry about things...I know...

Do you think everything has been expelled that ought not be in her uterus? I hope so...

Panacur is looking even better today! She's eating and drinking very well and just seems tired now. She is a lot more active than she has been since Sunday which definitely makes me happy.

Glad to hear she is feeling some better.
Sorry for the loss of the baby.

have you had words with the idiot vet yet? I hope they don't expect you to pay for such poor care

I just read your full story. I can only think you are thanking God for your chin girls improvement. But I do know how angry you are with that vet!

And I can tell you that your chin was in terrible pain. My story is a little graphic and just as serious. I gave birth to my daughter and for a days I had terrible pain. I phoned the office and the nurse said it was normal. Take Advil to lessen pain and keep scheduled return appointment. I could hardly sit. Walking was a nightmare. Well guess what????? They left a cotton gauze pad in the birth canal. Looks like they used it to hold the skin as they put the stitches in. Took graphic to explain how I found it. I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone. And I thank you for posting this story. Giving birth is the worst pain in the world. Having a complication afterwards is a living nightmare. DO NOT BREED IF YOU HAVE NOT THOUGHT OF EVERY COMPLICATION. YOUR ANIMAL CANNOT COMMUNICATE PAIN. AND DEATH CAN BE A PART OF THE LIFE CYCLE.

My thoughts are with you. Very sorry this happened. The poor dear.

Panacur held on for five days after passing a dead kit. While she was eating, her weight did not improve so the vet was still uncomfortable doing surgery on her. Last night she was showing signs of discomfort so I pushed the surgery. Obviously, the antibiotics had not helped. For those unfamiliar with pyometra (infection in the uterus), once an infection sets in, the only way to get rid of it is to do a spay. I was optimistic at first that I had gotten the head out in time before an infection set in. Last night, I checked her vagina since she seemed so uncomfortable and noticed pus coming out of her vagina. It smelled like an infection. So we pushed the surgery just to have her spayed. She came out of the surgery wonderfully last night and appeared to feel better. She was on pain medicine and antibiotics and took a good amount of lifeline from me. I continued to feed her and check on her throughout the night, but unfortunately...she passed on this morning. I don't know if the infection had just set in too deep or she had complications from the surgery, but she is out of pain now. RIP Panacur.

Oh, Tab, I am so incredibly sorry this turned out so badly for Panacur and her kits. You really went all out for Panacur and did all you could. I wish it had turned out differently :(

Sorry to hear about Panacur. I was hoping that she would recover after you found the head. My question is, Why didn't the vet check her better when all of the kit didn't come out? Would x-rays would haved showed anything?

This was a new vet that I've never been to before. Sunday was when I first took her in to the vet, and I couldn't get a hold of my regular vet. They don't have much experience with chinchillas, but she's an "exotic specialist" so felt qualified. We took initial X-rays that showed one kit stuck halfway in the birth canal. They gave her oxytocin and told ME that the entire kit had been removed. This office is a little odd in that they won't let you watch any procedures (I think I know why now...) so I wasn't physically there when they removed the kit. Since they removed "the entire kit" there was no need for further X-rays. I don't know how anyone can mistake a headless body for an "entire" kit. My only assumption would be that they assumed the head would come out later that night or dissolve or some other madness. Either way, I'm not going back there and I talked to my regular vet to get his emergency contact information.

What upsets me about the new vet visit is exactly what you said. How can they "mistake a headless body for a whole kit". I'm sorry that you couldn't get ahold of your regular vet, but I realize the emergency at that time. I didn't read anything in your first post about taking x-rays but I should have figured that a vet would at least do that. It's heartbreaking when things go wrong and have bad endings.

I'm hoping that people read these threads and think twice about breeding just for the fun of it. Yes, it can happen to you. I've had chins for 9 yrs and I was fortunate that the 2 times I had a pregnant female the worst that happened was a stillborn little boy. No more babies for me.

Sorry for your loss on the baby, hope the mom gets better, it can happen so many things with breeding, like what even happened to me, that I had that baby that was born with neurological problems and had to put him down, :(, so it's not always an easy thing.
