well when i was young i always had a huge fish tank and when i moved out on my own i nolonger had one. I somehow got motivated to "breed" and sell marimos/marimo jars and aquariums online and at conventions and craft fairs around mn. (kmarimos are japanese "moss balls") supposedly they bring good luck. i hope so seeing as i currently more than i can count.

the are naturaly rounded and the oldest known marimo was 100 years old. they Breed by breaking apart into smaller chunks that with wave action (or me rolling them into shape form balls)

they are considered a Japaneses national treasure. Native to lake Akan.(and some other lakes in europe as well) They can grow up to a 3rd of an inch with proper care a year. and depending on the light and temperature conditions will roll around/ and start to float around the tank.
and all the silly things need is their water changed every 2 weeks.

anyways i used my marimos as an excuse to get me a school of tetras.I currently have neon, blank, and black phantom tetras. though my tank is still rather empty and i aim to get many more cute lill fishys. lol

also if anyone is interested in a marimo(s)/ marimo jar i can make one for you. i can post pics of decorated jars and the size marimos that fit in it. i have setups that range from 7-30 dollars. and i can ship.

i love marimo moss balls. did you know they are not actually moss, but are algae?

i have three in my planted 20 gallon. you can see them if you look close at the far left tank in my signature photo. toying with the idea of opening one up and flattening it out over my mopani wood in the tank, to make a carpet of 'moss'.

pics of marimo jars set one
the three square jars are $15

(-.-) my cat aparently loves the tank. he has spent the last week living in front of it. though today he took it to another level he knocked off the lid and ran off with a floating marimo. it was adorable but now my apartment has a water trail through it bits of a marimo everywhere and a fishy smelling cat.

on another note my next batch of marimos will be ready in the next 2-3 days . if anyone wants some. i have small and large available ( most of my mediums are have been recently "breed" so they arent recovered enough to sell yet. im still forming them into shape itll take a week or to. )

yup i know their actualy algae. theyre also reallly good at killing other algaes off.
that would be a cool idea . sort of like carpeting your tank.

yep, they suck up all the extra nutrients in the water so the algae have nothing to 'eat'. i never have to clean algae in my tank, and part of that i have to thank the marimos for. the snails and the plecos take care of the rest of it.

if i decide to do the marimo moss carpet, i'll be sure to post a photo for ya.
