Hi there!

I'm a new member to the site, as well as a soon-to-be new chinchilla owner! I'm living in Nova Scotia, and I absolutely love Chinchillas! I'm finally able to afford my first one, and am just waiting for my Ferret Nation cage before I go pick out a Chin. I also have a cat! She's a bit of a fatty, but she loves snuggles and is probably the laziest animal I've ever seen. :p

I joined CnH because over the course of my life with this new Chin, I'm probably gonna have a lot of questions- some more obviously answered then most. Please, stay patient with me for a bit! I really do want to learn more about Chinchillas and how to provide a safe, happy environment for my new pet.

Thanks, and I look forward to my time here!

Hi and welcome! We're happy to have you here, and excited for you to get your soon-to-be new best friend!

I'll have to challenge you on who has the fatter, lazier cat! I have a 20 pound cat, and I'm sure he is the world's most lazy feline!

Haha, I believe my cat is somewhere around 15 pounds.. and to prove the laziness she's laying on a pile of dirty clothes I have in my room- she's been asleep there since I got home from work.

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone! I'm glad to see such a friendly community.

Quick question, while we're on the topic of lazy cats and new furry friends... My cat is about 9 years old, lazy as crap, and curious for about 10 minutes. Will my Chinchilla be bothered by her? I know at first Im keeping the cat out so the Chin can get used to its new environment, but eventually I'd like to let the cat roam my bedroom again(She loves it in here- if she isn't allowed to sleep with me at night she loses her mind).. will the Chinchilla be bothered by the smell or even the sight of the cat? I can guarantee at first the cat may go near the cage and try and see what the new smell is, but given that it's a FN cage it's off the ground a bit and I can guarantee you theres no way the cat is going to try and jump at it- I'll have her under strict supervision at first to be safe.

Obviously having them both out in the room may not end well- but will the Chin be alright if it's in the cage? I used to have a bird who would freak out if it even saw our old cat- however this one it walked right up to one day and scared this cat away- and nearly gave me a heart attack as well. :p

You always have to be careful with cats, because they can (accidently) kill a chinchilla so quickly, even with a simple swipe of their paw. You know your cat best, and I would definitely watch how they interact with one another (the animals should always have some distance between them) and see if the cat is overly interested, or if your chin becomes totally freaked. I have two cats who have never looked twice at my chin. They are also a little scared of my chin because of her sudden movements. My cats (are so lazy), didn't even go after my hammie who had escaped on two separate occasions, years ago. They simply laid on the floor next to him and watched him! My chin, also, is not bothered by any of the animals or chaos in the house. It did take her a while to settle in when we first got her, because there is a lot of noise and chaos in our house, but once she settled in and felt safe, she has not had an issue at all with the noise or other animals in the house.

Just play it safe, always err on the side of caution. Chinnies like to act tough, but they are actually quite fragile and have to be looked after carefully. :)
