I think you could possibly go with wire too. I wouldn't see why you couldn't. I would just make sure there isn't enough space between the wood pieces to get a foot caught in it. )

I use wire for my guys with a small bead in the middle. I'll post a picture when I get the whole cage redone, if I find room to put the bridge in there. I use wire because Ezio likes finding ways to make things more malleable and it scares the jeebers outta me.

Personally I use wire for my toys, with the exception of my swing since the wire is tight and can't get wrapped around a foot. I use to have chain toys, and came home one day to find a PW female with the chain wrapped around her leg, dangling. Luckily it wasn't broken but I took all the chain out that very day.
I'd love to see pictures! I'm playing around with a bridge right now for the holding cages, we are building out of melamine.
