Can I wean babies into a ferret nation cage, or would I still have to baby proof it?

You might be able to get away with the critter nation but ferret nation would most certainly need to be baby proofed.

I would baby proof it first. You can always remove the hardware cloth once they are too big to escape.

You MAY be able to get away with it as mentioned, but truthfully I've never seen a 2month old that it would be safe for. Any 2month old chin I've weaned, max was about 350g with a still small head. Even if they couldn't get out, they may be able to get stuck.

For newborns the largest spacing you would want is 1 inch by 1/2 inch. For weanlings, I recommend no larger than 1 by 1.

Thanks, I see that a lot, but I also say a lot of 1/2" x 1/2" and someone who said 1/4" x 1/4" and many others so it got quite confusing!
