    Chinchilla Sounds Resource

We hear these sounds regularly as we have a family of chinchillas now and we've always had at least 2 chinchillas. The calling sounds are misleading, we thought they were crying or just generally unhappy chinchillas. The chatter one we hear an awful lot :)

    Father and Babies

We were told that we should keep the father and mother apart until 6-8 weeks after the operation as he is still capable of producing little chinchillas. Though that is the plan, we will be keeping the parent chinchillas and will have to give the babies away. Re: tunes No fur flying, John just...

    Father and Babies

Our female chinchilla gave birth 7 weeks ago now and the babies (3 of them) are coming along nicely, so too is the male who was neutered 2 weeks ago and is almost his usual self. Soon we need to move the male babies into the father's side of the cage, and the divider will seperate the female...

    Chin not eating post operation

Thanks for all the responses, i've taken all on board and will speak to vet at 4.20 (that's 2 hours from now as well). He is not himself but he is eating some and pooing as well.

    Chin not eating post operation

I need to edit my recent post but cannot as it is under moderation. But once it appears i have an update. We've gotten the recover solution to work by filing the end of the syringe and in effect using it as a pipette (we're going to look for a pipette tomorrow). And shortly after he pooed and...

    Chin not eating post operation

Food solution is called recovery and antibiotics is baytrill. We have had problems using the solution in the syringe, it is thicker than we expected, even after grinding it down and adding water, and had problems giving the solution once it was in the syringe as well. I've searched for...

    Chin not eating post operation

Our male chinchilla was neutered on Friday after we had sought advice on what to do following our baby surprise. Two days later and though he has improved he is still a concern, though we have limited experience on unwell chinchillas and maybe we're expecting too much after two days. I'll...

Chin passed away from "internal trauma"

Losing a chinchilla is very sad. We lost one of ours a year ago during an op, we had questions as well as he just became very ill suddenly.

    Neutering

I'm in North Wales. We'e contacted a vet in Tarporley (Birch Heath Veterinary Clinic), they say they've had a very good success rate with them over the years and are more personal than other vets we've contacted. One particular vet said outright no, another has said that separating chinchillas...

    Neutering

I posted previously on babies and they are all doing great :) But we have a difficult choice to make, whether to neuter the male chinchilla and keep the parents and we will have to give the babies to RSPCA (we originally bought the female chinchilla from them so they've agreed to take the...

    Huge surprise!

We won't be breeding them again, we were shocked the first time and have learnt a lot in a short time so that we can raise all 3 babs. They're doing very well, but one is growing slower than the others. Apparently 2-4grams/day is good, two are growing 3/day consistently, but the other is...

    Huge surprise!

We were never going to put them together if they were going to breed, the point was the difference in opinion we were receiving. No problem with the separation, they've been apart since the birth, and we're weighing the babies every day. We've let the babies join John for a brief period of...

    Huge surprise!

Thanks for responses. I had two quick questions: 1. I breeder told us that after 10 days the parents can be together, but the responses here suggest that there is still a chance they could mate again. Just want confirmation on this point really. Is it just that the likelihood of them mating...

    Huge surprise!

I wrote the original message in a very messy way having read it back. I meant exactly what you said, that if we were to allow John and Cookie to remain together during this week that in 4 months time Cookie could be giving birth again. We don't want that, we didn't want or expect babies this...

    Huge surprise!

Our cage has 3 levels, and two halves which we've enforced to keep mum and dad seperate. We've put the food on the middle level on both sides so mum and dad will see one another when they eat, but this does mean it is out of reach of the baby chins (though apparently one of them was climbing up...

    Huge surprise!

Our supposed male chinchillas have managed to give birth to 3 chinchilla babies. Basically the female was id'ed male by RSPCA and we, incorrectly it turns out, assumed that was correct! Well it's day 2 for the 3 babies, we did not expect this but have useful contacts and seperated the male...
