If I didn't have the chin, it wouldn't be so bad. But I am in the Hamilton area of Ontario and it's been HOT! It got up to 74F in the house so I closed the windows and put the A/C on just for my chin.

Wow...I live in Texas...I never switched the A/C off this winter. It didn't stay very cold for more than a few days at a time so the apt. never cooled down from the weather alone.

Yep, mine has been on and off since last Tuesday. We got up to 80 degrees for a few days in late March.

I'm in the middle of a desert. We've had ours on for the past 2 weeks. But luckily it's in the 50's at night.

I made the rookie mistake of not testing the a/c out before it was needed. When it hit 85 outside last Wednesday, my apartment hit 85 even though I thought I had the air on full blast.
I spent all afternoon arguing with the landlord that while I can survive a few hours of over-80 temps until the next day, my animals could not. He finally checked my AC at 7 pm and refilled the freon- AFTER I spent all day rotating chiller stones from the freezer and blowing air over bags of ice. Thank goodness I was home sick that day or Flea might have stroked out while I was at work.

My dad will not turn the AC on yet, even though it has been about 80F in my room several days this past week. I'm considering making a swamp cooler.

Not good for your princess :(. I don't know what a swamp cooler is but you need to do something as your chin can overheat. Talk to your parents, a suggestion is an inside a/c for your room. I believe they sell them in Menards or Home Depot.

Swamp coolers aren't good for chins they put to much humidity in the air.

I have a window unit in my chin/bedroom and it's been on for a week, but the rest of us are waiting till we can't take it anymore to turn on the central air on.

Yeah my mom is understanding about how my chin has to be cool, my dad was complaining about it though. =\

A swamp cooler will not help your chin. A swamp cooler puts moisture into the air, and PA has always seemed to have plenty of moisture to me. There are build it yourself A/C's you can build that use a fan, some copper tubing, and ice. They seem to work pretty well and basically are the cost of running a fan. You can find a bunch of videos on youtube about it.

I've also run the air here for the past several weeks on and off. It's irritating the snot out of me too, because it tells me how nasty the summer is going to be. I am not a summer person. I hate heat.

Ive had the air on here in GA for a few weeks too, even though its only been about 80 here at the highest. I like it cooler, regardless of the temp outside or the season, so it works out for both me and my chinnies!

I have a nice cool basment I stash my chins, it never gets above 70 degrees down there. And they love it!

This is my plan for when it gets consistently too bloody hot, but this heat snap was just so random! 72 right now, 76 estimated for tomorrow, then back to the 50s like it should be here the rest of the week. I don't see the sense in moving him onto the (slate topped, the lucky devil!) pool table for 2-3 days, then back upstairs, then moving out with him in a month or two.

I haven't had to put on the A/C yet and probably won't have to for over a month. :) I think it's surprising that people up in Canada have to put the air conditioner on this time of year and I don't! I run an exhaust fan at night and cool off the house into the low 60s. I turn off the fan once it starts to warm up outside and it stays under 70 all day until the next night. Some years I can do this into June.

I'm going to go look that up, thanks!

Yea, I had to turn the AC on a week ago, and I live in MN of all places! But, chinnies come first! It's totally worth it :)

Ash, if your room is 80 I feel bad for your chin. That is entirely too hot for a chinchilla to be at for a few days. A few hours till an AC kicks on MAYBE, but not days.

I always ask people would they like to put on a fur coat and have to sit in those temps for days at a time. I agree see if you can have a little AC in your window.

A swamp cooler will not work, they are too humid. I am in PA too, and it was 89 here and will be 88 again today as we have had record highs. It will go back down later this week, thankfully, and then you wont have to worry as much, until the next heat wave.

On topic, my AC has been on for about 2 weeks off an on as needed. I have been able to have open windows most of the time, especially at night when it is cool, but yesterday, forget it. Was too hot.

Yesterday I put Tia in my father's room in the basement - it was 65F down there and she was much happier. When Dad came home to find her in his room, well that kinda upset him so he turned the AC on. My Dad is the "I don't cater to any &#$@ animals" type and there have been a lot of fights since I got Tia.
