What kind of berry?

Any ideas? Is it safe to eat? We have tons of this stuff around...

That is pokeweed and the berries are deadly poisonous to mammals, but birds eat them. You can boil the leaves several times and eat them, but they aren't good in my experience. I used to use them as target practice with my bb gun because the bb's would lodge inside the stem and I could get them back,

I believe that's a gray dogwood plant, but I could be wrong. The often have white berries, too.

If in doubt, take part of the plant or a photo to your local nursery. They will be able to tell you what it is.
