I'd noticed for a while that Henry wasn't eating everything, especially all his herbs, but since I'd got few nicer bits in and he was eating those and still eating harder food incl. pellets, and I think more of them, I thought he was being fussy at first and maybe just bored of some of the herbs, till he stopped eating his favourite things too. On the 17th he had a spur on his front teeth clipped. Unfortunately, the vet caught his tongue while he was doing it. I wish it'd been burred under anaesthetic really but the vet seemed confident. Immediately after, he was eating even less, so I do think it hurt. I've thought he was acting like it bothered him, pawing his mouth, eating slower, growling when I've approached to syringe feed.
He seemed to be very gradually picking up -I took him back to the vet and got some painkiller, that vet said his tongue was still very red, but it didn't really work because he wouldn't take the painkiller- and he took pellets again at Christmas, though was mostly eating a mush made with them. Then on Saturday he suddenly stopped eating almost entirely, only taking a little from the syringe -I did pretty much force feed him more on Sunday- and on Sunday seemed very lethargic, just sitting there, and felt weak to hold.
Today he's had his mouth examined and an X-ray - included below. The vet said his mouth is healed and the teeth seem to be Ok, so it could be an underlying liver/kidney issue issue causing appetite loss and then teeth overgrowth - I'm a bit puzzled though because he had seemed to still be eating enough overall until the week of the 17th. He is on phenobarbital long term for epilepsy, half a tablet a day, so liver issues are a concern. I think it was only a light anaesthetic, I'm baffled though by how lively he was this evening, even wall jumping, and back to fighting like a scratchy snake-demon when held, and he had about 30ml mushed pellets, including taking some from a bowl himself willingly. We've been referred to the exotics vet further away for a blood test on Thursday.
Would be grateful for any advice.
