My chinchilla has a massive amount of missing fur on his back and I am very concerned. He has a cage mate he was very bonded with and i’m wondering if maybe they could’ve got into it? Please direct me on what this could be? They’ve since been separated.

That looks like a massive fur slip, they do that as a defense. It doesn't look like fur chewing. If it happened in the cage and no other animals or people are around that could have touched him, likely either something scares the crap out of him and thought he was under attack (toy fell on/hit him for example), or the two were fighting.

Thank you! My biggest concern is the fact that there wasn’t a massive amount of fur in the cage. Just the usual shedding. No clumps of fur or anything? That’s where the confusion sets in.
