I am purchasing a baby from lone star chinchilla and was wondering if anyone had ever gotten and baby from them? Are they good breeders? Are they trustworthy? They seem really nice but just wanted to see what everyone thought... I know most of their products are high quality!

I don't know about the quality of chins they have as they have not participated in any shows. I have also become aware recently that they do not know the colors of their chins as have sold people the wrong colors - repeatedly.

These people have been looking to breed their "blue diamonds" and "violets" or "sapphires" and the chins aren't really those colors.

I have talked to the owners a few times and they seem nice otherwise.

Thank you! I really appreciate you responding! I've had this up for a while and no one has said anything! I am not very picky on color so that shouldn't be a problem. I really prefer standard grey or mosaic but honestly just want a healthy chinchilla! Do you know anyone who has gotten a chinchilla from them? Have you heard of any problems such as genetic issues?

I only know of the three people who were unhappy they were sold and charged high prices for incorrect colors. As far as genetic issues, they haven't been breeding long enough to know if the new herd they have has those. From talking to them they bred chinchillas for awhile over 10 years ago and very recently bought a bunch of chins to start again. They wouldn't tell me from where or what the pedigrees were so I'm not sure what they have genetically. I do know some of the more exotic recessive lines do have a number of health issues that cause them to die early - in particular blue diamonds out of the imported Denmark lines, black pearls that are being sold through pet stores (imported via PSP from the Czech republic) and angoras.

There is another breeder not too far from DFW called East Texas Chinchillas, Kevin and Tonya McDonald and they are super nice and have healthy lines and really care about the chinchillas. They do have those colors and are happy to work with people. :) I have met them in person and seen their animals and everybody I have spoken to has been extremely happy with the babies they've gotten from them. Good luck in your search!

Another thought, since you are on the Gulf Coast, Nola Chin Rescue. I cannot say enough what a valuable and ethical leader within the Chinchilla communities. Idk of any breeders, my 4 sons are from Petsmart. I know! To be fair, 2 are my grandchinchildren and 2 are mine. Ages 15. We were unaware of genetics until after the fact. There are many excellent breeders. Good luck. I love baby chins! Porncorning!!!! My boys are lazy. Not sure if it is normal popcorning stops at a certain age or if my lazy boys prefer i popcorn for them. Italian mothers:)

I'm located in Houston, TX and highly recommend NOLA Chinchilla Rescue. He will typically meet you at a halfway point if you can't make it all the way to New Orleans. Also, I've had great experience with Sunset Chinchillas in San Antonio. I know nothing about Lone Star Chinchillas.

We will be happy to talk to anyone about us and the chinchillas we breed, and have, for 25 years. As far as colors, this is news to us as we have never had a single complaint by anyone who has purchased from us. We do have blue diamonds and blue diamond carriers. Again, if anyone wants to know anything about Lone Star Chinchilla please feel free to speak to us directly. I have no idea who @Spoof is.

FYI: Not sure who these three people are as not a single buyer has ever said a word to us in 26 years of obtaining a wrong color. As you well know baby kits can, and do, change color as they age and some, at an early age, can be harder to classify. As far as "high" prices, I guess that is subjective. We have been breeding chinchillas since 1996 except for a very few months since then. I don't ever remember talking to you directly or knowingly about our chinchillas but are happy to let buyers know the pedigree of our chinchillas.
