I know snacks are generally not good for chins (too sweet, artificial additives, etc). But these little guys just love snacks.

Do you guys feed snacks? Can you recommend some healthy ones? Thank you.IMG_0729.jpg

There are plenty of safe treats for chins without having to give them unhealthy snacks. Mine gets mostly things I grow myself, like rose petals, rose hips, nettle, plantain, red clover flower, raspberry leaves, and mint.

Here is a list of safe treats

There are a few you can get at the pet store that are ok as well, I've bought the hibiscus flowers and the Oxbow timothy treats. I also give my boy the joint supplement as well since he is getting older (around 15/16) and they seem to help him.

Thank you! That's helpful! Just one quick question, would the flowers be too sweet for chins? And, how often do you give them every day?

P.S. I have the Oxbow timothy treat too!

The flowers on the list are all fine for chins, just one flower or a few petals (a good general idea is the treat shouldn't be bigger then the top part of your pinky finger) 2-3 times a week. You can rotate the treats though so you can give them something everyday but I wouldn't give say apple blossoms every day, but you can give apple blossoms one day, then some rose petals another day, some mint another day, etc.

The only thing that is on the list that should be limited is the goji berries, they are sweet but ok as a special treat at most one berry a month, personally I don't give them at all.

My chin's favourite treats are rose hips, rose petals, chamomile flowers, and lavender petals, though your mileage may vary. Just make sure any flowers and herbs you give are a) on the list of safe treats, and b) are dried and organic. :)

Thanks for your tips! I'll stop by the pet store and buy some rose hips. Sounds like they like rose products!
