popsicle sticks are commonly made from balsa wood, which splinters really easily and can cause slivers in a chin's mouth. i personally wouldn't give balsa to my chins. i did buy a popsicle stick toy a while back when i first got Rhino, but after he destroyed it in less than a day, and read on here about how balsa can be a danger, i haven't given any more toys made of popsicle sticks or balsa.

that being said, there are a few bird toys that i have bought that are safe. from petsmart, the 'bird kabob' made of yucca is a good one (the yucca looks like thick disks of papery wood) http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2750670

the grapewood toy is safe too. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11147252

and the palm leaf shredders are good http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753428

the biggest problem with toys bought in stores is that the packaging never tells you what type of wood the toy is made of.

I looked at bird toys at petsmart too- and Chinnymom is right about the packaging not indicating what woods they have used... That's why I just tossed in the towel and bought toys from members on the board.

for me, getting things shipped can be an extra expense that like to keep at a minimum, and with a petsmart so close to me (not even a 15 minute walk, lol), it is so convenient to pick up one or two things when i'm there getting shavings, dust and pellets (three things that are super expensive to get shipped to me, due to the weight and size. getting them at petsmart is actually cheaper!).

what i've done when i'm interested in a toy at a store and it doesn't say what it is made from on the package, is email the manufacturer and ask.

Oh, thanks...I won't give the popsicle treat to them yet-I'll put it aside for now until I find out if it's alright. They are still getting used to things here so I doubt they'll miss a chew toy yet. They seem to be enjoying their hay cubes, food and attention right now. Nothing better than lovin'!

i would just take the popsicle toy back and exchange it for something more chin safe. go for that yucca kabob toy i mentioned (if petsmart is where you got the popsicle toy), they should love destroying it! lol. and it's strung on an un-oiled sisal rope, which is also safe.

Bascially in a nut shell alot of birds toys are safe for chinchillas but alot of them are not. You would need to find out what items are chinchilla safe and then take it from there.. Like birds can chew on plastic but chinchillas can not because it is dangerous for them, birds and chins can have some of the same woods, but some of them are dangerous for chinchillas, same with ropes..etc..
