Hi all! We are getting ready to bring home two female baby chins, both about 3-4 months old. I am eventually planning on getting a double critter nation cage and modifying it to make it chin safe, however my understanding is that these are too big and pose a fall risk for babies. Any recommendations or thoughts on what to get for them in the meantime?

You can get the double critter nation right away if you want, and just close off half the cage so they only have access to one unit until they are older (about 6 months). The double unit cage is easily split into two, the little ramp that is in the cage between the two units acts as a trap door, you can then either use the bottom pan on top if you plan to have them in the top unit or just flip the cut out pan so the cut out isn't over the spot with the hole.

Thank you! Follow up question: After looking at all the options, I like the idea of getting the Quality Cage setup that comes with all of the accessories and wooden shelves rather than making all of the modification to the critter nation myself, but there is a long lead time on those. Is there anything smaller and inexpensive that I could use in the meantime? (Just looking for something that would be sufficient until I get the full, bigger setup)

Unfortunately most cages on the market you need to modify to make safe so unless you are able to find a cheap used cage you aren't really saving much after you modify it. You could probably get away with something like https://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Chinc...eywords=chinchilla+cage&qid=1610061779&sr=8-5 if you cover the floor grating, but it's almost the same price as a single unit critter nation. You really don't want a cage smaller then about 12 cubic feet for comfort, the bare minimum size for a chin though is 8 cubic feet (size of a breeder cage).
