When I've had to put Maci in the plastic cat carrier I lined it with fleece. I had lost power and had her in the car for the AC and later to a friends house. It worked in a pinch.

I've used both kiln dried pine and aspen. Both are safe as mentioned. Maci and I both prefer the aspen.

Did you put any clean shavings in there? I wouldn't worry about it...as said they can be nasty. Aspen is safe. If it was carefresh it'd be a issue.

Maci was peeing in her dish. I have a Midwest style dish that bolts onto the FN. I relocated it so there is a shelf over it. She an get to her food, but no comfortably perch and sit on it. Stopped the peeing problem. It is up towards the top. Rarely gets poop in there. Only if it rolls...

X3 FN will probably be the easiest, cheapest way to house them separate ( but only in 1 actual cage). I'd also guess it would take the least amount of room.
