    pneumonia

After an emergency vet visit because of a lack of appetitie, I learned that my chin, Digit, has pneumonia. The results of the x-ray show that his right lung is full of gunk. He's been at the vet for the past two days getting treatment through meds and a nebulizer. He's coming home tonight. I'm...

    preventing foot infection

A couple days ago, I noticed blood on one of Digit's shelves. I checked him out and his rear paw looked like it had taken off about 3 or 4 layers in one spot. It was red, but didn't look swollen and wasn't draining pus. He got rinsed with saline, Blu Kote'd, and then Bag Balm was put on there...

    not eating after toe injury

Basil got his toe bitten 3 weeks ago by my other chin, Digit (http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4368). He was on Baytril for about three days and then was on TMS. The antibiotics have been done for about three days now. I've been hand feeding for about two weeks and recently...

broken tail - how to tell

I cringe even as I write this, but how would you tell if a chin has a broken tail? Would they cry when you touch that area? Would you be able to feel the break?

    bitten toe

Baz got his toe bitten tonight by Digit. The e-vet put him under and snipped part of his toe off and stitched it up. Baz immediately started gnawing on his paw so a make-shift e-collar was put on him. Of course now that I'm home, I have tons of questions. -Baz is in a smaller cage now with the...

    chin needs to gain weight

I adopted Murphy about 3 weeks ago. His last weigh in at the rescue (in October) was 496 grams. When I weighed him last night, he was at 500. I am not comfortable with how thin he feels, which is downright bony. I know some chins tend to run on the smaller side, but I'd like to see if he can put...

    kit age & wire spacing

At what age does a chin go from a kit to an adult? Are there any in-between stages? (teenager, etc?) Also, at what age can you go from 1/2x1 wire spacing to something larger, say 1x1?

    contacting JP Chinchillas

I wanted to order a couple things from Judy's site, but I don't see contact info anywhere. Anyone know her email address or number? Thanks.

    bulk aspen bedding

Has anyone found bulk aspen bedding online - larger than 4 cubic feet? I've found bulk pine bedding at the local feed stores but have had no luck finding aspen. I know that either will work, but the pine seems to scatter easier and both boys like gnawing on the aspen shavings.

    Heart murmur

A chin I'm planning on adopting has a (level? stage? four) heart murmur. The vet and the lady I'm going to be adopting him from both said it shouldn't affect his quality of life and lots of chins have them. I was just curious about other people's experiences with chins with heart murmurs. Is...

    poop issues

I adopted a rescue about a week ago and am now seeing some issues with his poop. The rescue noted that he had been constipated and some of his poops fit the definition - pinched off ends. However, he has been having some very large poops lately. One of them was slightly soft tonight, but not...

    peeing in food

Will someone please remind me what type of feed dish I can use so that my new little one will stop peeing in his food dish.

    quarantine - distance between cages

It doesn't matter how much reading I do about quarantine, I always forget. If I keep my chin that's in quarantine in one part of the hallway and have my other chin play in another part of the hallway, would that be breaking quarantine? I know the goal is to keep them apart so the new one's...
