LOUD? Hard for chin to sleep??

Our chinchillas are in the living room so they have the TV on all night. It provides ambient noise so they aren't usually startled by loud noises. We just had a lot of illegal fireworks on the 4th and the chinchillas ignored it.

    Chinchilla trying to escape??

Chinchillas don't sit still on your lap, especially if they are younger. They are so curious and high energy so it isn't you or lack of out time. It's just a curious chinchilla that wants to search out what will get her in the most trouble. The digging is her way of telling you she wanted to...

    Odd question regarding raw food

My cat eats raw food and the chinchillas are fine. We don't let the chinchillas run on the ground so there is no chance of them getting near the food or litter box. I found that my boys prefer the playpen or to run on the couch because they feel safer there.

    Weird noises while on wheel

We call that the death squeal of joy. Mine don't do it very often but then they do it makes my heart leap in fear each time. Every time I've checked on them they were happily playing in their cage. Also friendliness depends on the chinchilla. Also as a prey animal he may just be happy to be...

Dry food stuck between teeth - how do help him without a vet??

I'd recommend going to a vet and having him do it. It often takes sedating for the vet to be able to work on teeth. I also don't recommend seeds for chinchillas as all they need is pellets, hay and things like wood chews. The only treats we give are rose hips and unsweetened shredded wheat in...

    Unsure of Everything

If it's a blue cloud rock and not dust you can leave it in the cage. Our guys will chew them into dust and roll in it but it's not enough dust to irritate their skin.

Edgar Has Been Diagnosed With Malo

I feel extremely lucky and know that Edgar is the exception. I also know that one day he will probably relapse because of the way his x rays look. Until that time comes we're just going to be thankful to have him still with us.

    Traveling with chinchilla

We travel with our chinchillas and they even do well with new people when introduced properly. We use travel cages with metal bars that we cover or place in another carrier. We also have a play pen for them to have out time in so that it's familiar. I actually think having the cage at your...

    Startling behavior, what is this!?

If your chinchilla is over 8 months he may get a little frisky and hump you, pillows, stuffed animals or anything that may resemble a female chinchilla. I recommend getting a cuddle buddy for him to use as a substitute. When they try they will squeeze with the front paws and hold your hand/...

Edgar Has Been Diagnosed With Malo

Just wanted to post that Edgar continues to be healthy and hasn't had any other problems. We continue to weigh him daily, along with the other two boys, so we that we can tell if somethings off. Amazingly Edgar has hit all time highs with his weight and is really happy. I honestly didn't...

Chinchilla Bonding in groups of three

I have three boys and three cages. Two are too aggressive for me to consider it. It's amazing how my boys can go from sweet pets to ready to kill each other. Oscar will even to some huffing and puffing if Edgar is in the bottom of his cage over two feet away. My advice is never get another...

Edgar Has Been Diagnosed With Malo

Just wanted to say that Edgar has continued to do great. It took a while but he's gained all of the 80 grams he lost back. We weigh him daily and watch him like a hawk but no signs of problems. Thank you again for to everyone who helped as it meant a lot. Next time I'll probably just post...

Edgar Has Been Diagnosed With Malo

Thank you both! Edgar continues to gain and his last weigh in was 619g. He has no symptoms of pain and is his playful self. We will continue to weigh him daily for now as it gives us peace of mind. We hope he can have the bottom of his cage back soon but aren't going to give him a wheel. He...

Edgar Has Been Diagnosed With Malo

Just wanted to say that Edgar continues to do well and the bruising in his mouth is no longer visible. He's also gained 20g and we hope he continues to. We weigh him daily now and will keep a record of his weight for the rest of his life. Jackie got his own cage but we haven't given Edgar the...

Rescued a Chin that looks terrible.

That's really great news! I sometimes think rescued chinchillas can make the best pets. They seem to appreciate having a safe and happy home once they get one.

Edgar Has Been Diagnosed With Malo

Just wanted to say that Edgar seems to be doing much better. His poops have firmed up and are getting to normal size. He also has a lot more energy and is running around his cage talking like normal. I'm really hoping that he stay like this for a while and that we can keep him pain free...

Edgar Has Been Diagnosed With Malo

Edgar's home. They found a spur right where the bruising was and filed it. We are praying that he feels better and starts eating more. He's going back to the vet in a few days for a follow up. We also have a large bottle of pain meds to give to Edgar as needed.

Edgar Has Been Diagnosed With Malo

Thank you. He probably should have gotten it from the first vet after the filing but I didn't insist. His new vet is going to give us enough to have it on hand from now on. I will probably rely on all of you to make sure he's getting the right dose.
