ISO adult male in New England (Boston, Massachusetts)

Hi everyone, It has been a long time since I have posted! I learned everything I need to know from you guys in 2013 as I awaited the birth of my sweet boy! Bovril is 7 now and so sweet and mild-mannered. While I think Bovril does fine on his own and shows no signs of stress or depression, I...

    Rabbit moving in..potential health concerns?

Hi, My new tenant has a rabbit who is moving into the house. I know there's a potential risk of chinchillas getting diseases from rabbits, but how big is that risk? I'll never allow them to interact, but how far away must they be kept from each other? Can they be kept in the same room?

Little Bovril played hide and seek on me this morning...

I woke up this morning to Bovvy's distressed bark, so I went to see what was up. I couldn't find him anywhere! Then I saw his fleece liner quiver... He managed to pull up a corner of his fleece, burrow underneath, and get stuck. He was definitely scared but he looked pretty cute... I scooped him...

    Sup, ladies?

Bovvy was lookin super smooth and handsome the other day. He's very, very photogenic! He's also super sweet. He resists being picked up, but once he's up, he's pretty good. Last night he was totally fearless when my friends held him.

Bovvy is vocalizing for the first time. Question?

Bovril was just doing his normal thing, when suddenly he stiffened, stared intently at the corner of his cage, and started making a sound like a wheezy squeaky toy. Then he did it again at another corner. This is the first time I've ever heard a chin vocalize, so I just wanted to make sure this...

    Finally introducing my boy.

This is my ebony baby boy, Bovril. <3 He'll be 12 weeks old tomorrow. He's such a sweetheart and I just adore him. He's been here for almost two weeks now and he seems really happy.

My boy seems to be actually ingesting mulberry wood.

I have apple, pear, and mulberry wood for my chin, and while he leaves the stripped apple and pear sticks alone once he's stripped the bark off, he's peeling the actual mulberry wood like it's string cheese and as far as I can see he's actually ingesting it, not shredding it... he had the wood...

What's it like evolving from owner to breeder?

(I'm not thinking about breeding or anything!) There was a recent thread from a woman who wanted to move her chins into her shed, and people answered that it depended on whether she kept pets or chins for breeding. If pets, it was time to give her chins to someone with more quality time to...

    No treats before 6 months.

Hi guys, I've accepted the "no treats for chins under 6 months" as conventional wisdom from all of you experienced owners, but I've just never seen the reasoning explained and I'm curious. Can someone enlighten me?

    Fresh (non-dried) herbs?

Hi there, I know that many people give herbal supplements to their chins, and I assume those are dried. Do fresh, non-dried herbs fall under the "no leafy greens/veggies" umbrella? Not planning on doing it; just curious because I saw someone on the internet feeding their chin fresh ones.

How did your furbabies get their names?

My boy, Bovril, is named after a loris from Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy. I was torn between him and his sister when I was choosing, and I was leaning towards her because I started calling her Aoife so I got attached, but once she came up with Bovril (she introduced me to the books), it...

I hope my boy is an art enthusiast...

...because I made him The Scream! :neener:

    Greetings from MA!

I'm Ellie, and I'm bringing home my baby boy, Bovril, May 11. I met him a week ago when he was 3 weeks old and I couldn't be more excited to bring him home! Most of his supplies are on their way, and I've hopefully snagged a critter nation from craigslist if all goes well.

Litter box training with fleece lining?

How would I go about litter box training my chin with a fleece liner in the cage? From what I've read, the way to go about it is to take shavings with urine on them and put them in the desired area, but how would I do that without shavings? Should I keep a small amount on hand for just the...

A friend gave me a free cage. Question about plastic bottom.

A friend gave me a very spacious cage (I'll upload a pic when I'm not doing this from my phone) but it needs some work. I'm going to replace all the shelves with pine, etc. My question is with the plastic bottom. The cage sits in a plastic tray, but its not attached in any way. Is that bad...

I think I'm just psyching myself out.

I met my 3 week old kit today at the breeder's home and I got to hold him for quite a while. He was totally sweet and curious, but a little calmer than his sister--he spent part of the time content with being held. The breeder handles him daily so he's used to it. I'm bringing him home in May...
