First Vet Trip - Meds and Symptoms Questions

Besides the redness - which i'm assuming is from the needle aspirates, that is normal anatomy. Recommendations - call ahead and ask questions like: how many have you seen, previous personal experiences, what kind of diseases have you treated, etc. I fully recommend a wellness exam - that way...

First Vet Trip - Meds and Symptoms Questions

Going back to the original reason you took him to the vet - can you post a pic of his toes? It sounds like a normal, what I consider "grooming" toe. The inside toe has a bump above the nail with more coarse hairs from it than the other toes. This thread emphasizes the need for people to do...

    Procaine benzylpenicillin

PenG is indicated for abscesses in chinchillas and rabbits (as an injection, NOT orally). It is often effective for the anaerobes that set up shop. Baytril is not effective against anaerobes. Are you hand feeding him with critical care?

    South East Coastal 2014 show

I might actually be able to pop in for a bit! I am looking for a BV female if anyone has them coming out of their ears and just can't bear to keep them all! haha

I just moved to Charlotte, NC. I have a female for sale on my webpage and will have a little standard boy for sale after weaning in a few weeks.

    Possible Amputation

We had one about 6 weeks old, that had a rear leg amputation. It went amazingly and mom didn't even bother the suture line.

Help with wound care suggestions please

The honey can be used in open wounds - it's used to stimulate healthy granulation tissue to form and keep bacteria down. It should be placed in the wound if the wound does not go too deep. This will need to be changed often if it looks like there is a lot of ooze coming from the wound. If it's...

    Paralyzed Kit

The biggest issue would be whether she can urinate and defecate normally. If she can, great - you can probably figure out a way to house her. If she cannot completely express her bladder then this will predispose her to urinary tract infections, stones, etc. Much more difficult to manage. I'd...

    2014 MCBA National Show

Very sad that I won't be able to go for the second year in a row! Hopefully next year I'll have something to show and also available time off! I feel like I've fallen off the face of the earth :( stupid growing up, and stupid responsibilities. On a side note, anyone have an extra bag of dust...

    UTI/ Bladder Stone?

You may want to have the stone analyzed. This could be related to calcium or not, other things cause stones. Not drinking enough and UTIs among other things. Changing the diet could be a complete waste of time and may not prevent this from happening again - just FYI. Hope he heals well for you...

Looking for fleece covered *half* PVC tubes

Nope, I'm pretty open to selections - nothing too girly. Can't remember who I got my last one from but it's got a colorful owl pattern on it.

Looking for fleece covered *half* PVC tubes

I'm looking for two half PVC tubes, and may be interested in filling the rest of the box with wood, shelves or toys if you have them also. Thanks!

    International Traveling

You first need to find out the importation requirements that New Zealand has. There isn't much in the way of an animal leaving the US, it's getting it in the next country that's the problem. On a quick scan, it looks like you cannot import a chinchilla to New Zealand except from Great Britain...

    NOLA/Baton Rouge suggestions!

A couple friends and I are heading down to New Orleans/Baton Rouge for spring break/vet student symposium. We'll have almost 3 full days before the symposium to get our tourist on. Any suggestions from those that have been before? What to do, what to eat, where to go, where NOT to go? We will...

How much to save for a first colony!

If you are definitely going to set aside a vet fund (which I think is awesome - kudos) - I'd find out how much an emergency (after hours, sunday afternoon type deal) c-section is in your area and save up that much plus a little extra. That way you have money for the worst case scenario. If...

    Need Advice

Are you sure this isn't the warning/scared bark that chins do? Their heads bob a little when they do this. You can probably find a video on youtube to compare if you aren't familiar with the barking noise.

How many pets do you have?

When you have a big heart, it's hard not to get attached to animals and want to save them all. I've connected with quite a few shelter animals and even though I wanted them so so bad I had to realize when I could and when I couldn't take them home. For that reason, I don't foster, ever. I just...

Making the call... when it's time to let go

Is he incontinent? Is that what you mean by cleaning up messes? Ultimately it's your decision, you are the one living with him and can see his quality of life. Someone suggested to me to make a list of the animal's top 3 things they like/like doing and once they can't anymore then it is time. I...
