    Goodnight my sweet Baloo

A few days ago we lost our baby Baloo. He had been recovering from surgery on his foot and was doing well. We went for a post-op appointment to check his sutures and while there the vet did a standard check on his heart and lungs. Everything looked great but he had some slightly wet poos and...

My Chinchilla Kidney Major Caused a Series of Problems help!!!

Okay, unfortunately I think you are doing all that you can. His poops will tell you everything. If they’re small and tiny there is risk of gastrointestinal (gi) stasis aka bloat again. If they’re small and crumbly he is dehydrated. You want his poops to look at least the same size as his...

    Arthritis?

Our chin recently was diagnosed with arthritis in his joints. Has anyone experienced this with their chins? Any advice? We have made his cage arthritis-happy but he needs pain meds for a bit until his inflammation is under control.

    Daytime activity

It was a blast watching her because she would immediately turn to the tv to watch the meerkats scury around. And you would see her head occasionally tracing their movements on the tv. She was very invested! She also did the same thing with the movie White Chicks which we could never figure out...

    Strange, Stress-Related Behavior? Please advise.

It kind of reminds me of the seizures we saw in our young chinchilla when he was experiencing extreme stress but those “episodes” occurred for about 5 minutes and took him about an hour to go back to normal. He doesn’t have them anymore, but when he did he would have spasm-like movements of his...

    Daytime activity

They definitely get used to different noises especially if they hear them daily. We used to have a chinchilla that enjoyed watching TV. She was in the family room where the TV was always on. When the TV was off she was more on edge and alarm called more frequently. Her favorite show was Meerkat...

Timothy hay blend vs coarse cut

My male eats about a quarter of his hay and ignores the rest. He is also extremely picky with hay brands we have used. Small Pet Select is usually a popular choice recommended by the chin community and he sticks his snooty little nose up at it. Right now we get our 2nd cut timothy hay from High...

Anti-Gravity Bottles? Where is this from?

Ooh the plastic bottles they sell are so darn close! Unfortunately ours is glass. No idea where they come from.

Anti-Gravity Bottles? Where is this from?

Hi all, We have been trying to search high and low for at least one more of these bottles. The first one was given to us by a breeder and it’s the only type of bottle our chinchilla actively uses. We have tried other kinds of every brand and type as backup but he will avoid them and struggle...

    Chinchilla missing fur on nose

Final update: After witnessing him chewing on his cage bars we were able to see his hair coming off in the process. So after talking to the vet and putting some hay matts down/across his favorite chew areas, we tried to see if it was just him having excess energy. Unfortunately he started...

    Chinchilla missing fur on nose

Well, we are still not sure what caused his balding but it does seem to be slowly growing. We are going to take him back to the vet and insist on a fungal culture to rule it out.

    Travel to US with Chins

I have never done it myself, but there does seem to be information online with the US customs and border patrol site. https://www.cbp.gov/border-security/protecting-agriculture/bringing-pets-and-wildlife-united-states...

    Best/Worst Brand of Dust

I personally really like Chill Dust. It’s the finest sand we have come across and our chinny goes mad for it. He won’t roll as much in other ones. Worst dust I ever used I don’t actually recall the name of — it was more like sand than actual dust. That being said in my experience the Kaytee...

    Chinchilla missing fur on nose

Well, sometime later and still can’t tell if it has gotten worse or not. Every time we look at his spot it looks different - different angles can make it look way worse than it is or better. Skin looks completely fine but no real hair fuzz yet. Going to be a bit stressed about this until I see...

    Chinchilla missing fur on nose

Thank you! His name is Baloo. We weren’t sure what to name him originally until we saw him and instantly reminded us of a little bear. He acts like a teddy bear too! Very friendly little guy.

    Chinchilla missing fur on nose

Took him to the vet today as we wanted to rule out ringworm and the vet told us he is “98.5% positive” it isn’t ringworm. We will continue to monitor him and see if anything changes. Hoping for more visual evidence of hair growth.

    Baloo

Hi all this is Mr. Baloo. He is a standard grey RPA. He is just over a year old and absolutely LOVES getting his paws on anything he shouldn’t touch. Unlike most chinnies, he gets bored with the norm and will go after anything he considers “new”. He will immediately claim the new objects as...

    Chinchilla missing fur on nose

We think we see some hair coming back in but can’t say for sure. We are going to continue antifungal treatments and see what happens within the next few days. He has had furslip there in the past (we witnessed it) and the fur usually comes back in about a week.
