    Chinnie not eating his pellets

Hello, I noticed a couple days ago my chinnie hasn't been eating as much pellets as he typically does. Usually I give him 1-2 tbs daily, and he hasn't been touching it much lately. He'll take a few nibbles from it but the bowl is never empty the next morning like it usually is. However, he's...

What types of air purifiers are safe?

I heard that air fresheners are unsafe for chins, which is explainable, but that air purifiers aren’t. I’ve never used either before in the chinnie room, but I’m thinking about putting one in there to keep the room smelling fresh. Are there certain types of purifiers that I should avoid? Are...

Advice on playtime and room setup?

Hello, I noticed on some chinchilla blogs, stories and videos the owners let their chinnies free in their room, hallway, or staircases for playtime. What really bewildered me is how, if they are, they are able to keep their chins away from unhealthy objects to chew on. Also, how do they clean...

Are peppermint candles safe for chinchillas?

Hello, As winter nears, the ladybug population in my area are increasing rapidly. Now there's an infestation on the chinchilla room! I want to use peppermint candles to repel them, but I first want to know-- is it safe for my two chinchillas? What other safe options do I have? Thanks!

    Sudden odd behavior please help

Hi, I’ve had Bilbo, my second chinchilla, for a couple of months now. He and Rocket, my first chinchilla, share a room. Recently I reorganized the room, putting Bilbo and Rocket on the same wall with their cages about 8 inches away from each other. I also put a new waterproof rug on the floor...

Substitute for cardboard when covering walls

Hi, recently I’ve placed cardboard at the bottom of the door (where my chinchilla likes to try and bite the paint). However, now he tries to chew and eat the cardboard during playtime. It upsets him whenever I have to shoo him away from it (which is a lot). Does anybody know of any other cheap...

    Safe bath houses

Hi, I'm searching for a safe, durable bath house that can prevent most of the dust from flying out. I'm currently using a cardboard box but it's difficult for the chinchillas to have full contact with the dust on the flat surface. The Kaytee Chinchilla Bath House seems to be a popular choice...

    How do I apply blu-kote?

Hi, I purchased blu-kote (dauber form) for my chinchilla, who was bitten on his cheek. Before I try applying it, I want to verify that I’m going to do it correctly. Do I apply a little on the wound with a q-tip and then leave it to dry? Or do I leave it there for a little and then wash it off...

My new chinchilla was bitten, what do I do?

Hi, last night my first chinchilla (Rocket) got out of his cage because I accidentally left the top door open. My second chinchilla (Bilbo) follows Rocket around from his cage during playtime; he seems to want to fight but I’m not positive. I’m guessing Rocket and Bilbo fought through the cage...

    Are hamster balls safe occasionally?

Hi, I want to let me chinnies run around me in my room, but my parents are against having them loose in there. In addition to playtime, is it alright to let them run around in a ball for a little? I want to let them play in my room while I work. I understand that hamster balls are unsafe, so I...

    Is my chinchilla sick?

Hi, Throughout the entire 3 months I've had my chinchilla, I noticed he doesn't have as much energy as my other guy. He'll sometimes stay inside his cage even when the door is open for playtime, or when he goes out he only runs around for no more than 10 minutes. He's more energetic at night...

Shaggy fur even after dust bath

Hi, I’ve had my second chinchilla for few months now (I’ve been fostering him and only recently adopted). The whole time that I’ve been taking care of him he has had shaggy fur around his rump. His fur is quite dense, not as soft as my other guy. Even after a dust bath. He just has some longer...

Does anybody know of any well-priced vendors?

Hi, I'm beginning to look for vendors that supply bulks of wood blocks, sticks, and other toys that can me used to make DIY kabobs and chew toys. Does anybody know of a well-priced vendor? Thanks.

    Safe wood for DIY ledges?

Hi, recently I visited Lowe’s who apparently have safe KN pine with no sprayed chemicals. The employee who helped me out claimed the Whitewood they had was KN pine, so I purchased a slab and constructed a few ledges with poop guards. Someone who used this in their cage recommended it. Does...

Is this a good chinchilla cage?

Hi, I'm might be adopting a second chinchilla soon and I'm searching for cages. Currently I have the feisty ferret cage for my chinchilla. The cages I'm most interested in are the critter nation and ferret nation. However, I found this cage being sold on craigslist. The owner has been using it...

    Fostering Two Chinchillas

Hi, I'm fostering two chinchillas until a certain court case is over. If the defendant wins (god forbid, he was abusing hundreds of expensive animal breeds), I will be forced to return them. If he loses, however, they will go up for adoption and I am planning on keeping at least one of them...

    What are safe chew toys?

Hi, I usually order 500g of apple sticks for my chinchilla but I'm worried that he's eventually going to grow bored of them. It's always necessary to have these sticks around since they last longer. Every other toy I've gotten him he destroys after one day; it's beginning to get expensive. I've...

    Are dandelion drops healthy?

I have these treats by Vitakraft called Drops with Dandelion. Feeding instructions include offering your chinchilla 1-2 treats per day. Per day? The first ingredient it lists is sugar. How healthy is this treat really? Can this truly be a daily treat? Thanks

Are two chinchillas better than one?

I've heard some chinchillas are more social than others, but is it better to have two? I have one year old male who seems social but I feel bad leaving him alone. I had thought about adopting another chinchilla to keep him company, but I wasn't sure if he would be upset I was caring for another...

chinchilla got a nibble of metal gear grease

Hi, my chinchilla managed to get a nibble of a q-tip with some grease on it. I stayed with him for about an hour after I took it away from him to make sure he was ok. He's popcorning and running around as usual so I think he only chewed on it or ate a tiny bit. Is a vet necessary? thanks
