    Oxbow food changing

I just checked Petsmart's website and they don't have Oxbow Chinchilla. Wow! Now neither Petco or Petsmart carry a good chinchilla food. I feel really bad for those that don't know a breeder and don't use the internet to order food.

URI? Esophagus blocked? X-rays and synesthesia? Panicked.

Clicking when breathing is usually pneumonia and it is extremely difficult to clear up. When he eats, he is probably aspirating because he can't breath right while eating. This makes things worse. All you can do is keep trying and feed him slowly. Keep him on meds and keep him hydrated...

Oxbow no longer available at Petsmart?

Purina Rabbit Chow Show Formula is basically the same as Oxbow Chinchilla. You can't get it at pet stores, but feed stores sell it in 50 pound bags. Also, many members on her sell it and it is cheaper to order it from them and pay the shipping than it is to buy the Oxbow chinchilla (if you can...

    Painting wooden accessories safely??

Kool aide does work to a degree. Loofa dyes well but wood not do much and colors like blue, green and yellow don't work well at all. We dye our loofa and some wood. To work well on wood you would need to make it much stronger that you need for loofa.

    Unexpected Surprise!

Looks like a standard gray and a black velvet to me. Get daddy separated asap. You will need to count another 111 days from the day you separate them because they probably bred back.

    Lightest survived birth weight

I will have to post some pictures that I took with my phone. Sad to say, the little one did not survive. We lost him on day 5. He was bouncing around and eating like a little piggy when I went to be and the next day he was laying at the front of the cage, dead. I will miss that little trooper.

Chinchilla has started eating rapidly and hardly chewing

As ling as he is eating his food and hay, he is fine. Large poops are good, not bad. He may just be going through a growth spurt right now and need to eat more food. You may want to watch that he does not keep the other chin from eating. Two bowls will take care of that problem. As far...

Sudden full body "twitch" and scabs on neck

How often are you bathing her? She could have dry skin that itches. Try bathing her less often and see if that helps. That rapid shake is actually normal, they just do everything at a rapid rate.

    Seizures/Vertigo?

This chin needs a vet now. He cannot wait until you get home and the trip could make things worse for him. I had one chin shove its cage mate off of the shelf the two were on. She fell 18 inches and went into seizures and died within just one minute of the fall. the fact that he is still...

    Need to rant!

As most of you probably know, I rescue as well as breed. About 2 weeks ago, I arranged to pick up 7 chins from a guy named Cody. When we arrived at his place it looked like it belonged on Hoarders. The place smelled horrible - my son said a combination of filth and crack house. I could not...

    Flooring

Just a quick note... tile and grout are porous. You really should seal it before allowing the chin to be in the cage. If you don't, eventually, the urine will soak in and the tile will start stinking.

    Broken Tail ?

Chins often will not react to pain like you would expect. They are prey animals and instinct causes them to hide any pain or illness.

    Grabbing neck with paws?

Hi, how is she doing? Stop feeding her the food with treats in it. That is making things worse. Also, cardboard can swell up in the gut and cause a blockage. Don't give that to her. As you know the fruits and vegetables are a no-no and don't use the cat laxative, bad idea. She needs...

    What states don't allow chins?

There are several breeders in Colorado. I, myself, am one and live in the Denver metro area. It's a wonderful place to live with lots to do. If you feel like it, contact me sometime so you have a fellow chin lover to talk to. By the way, the weather in Colorado is great for chinchillas. It...

    Newbie owner/breeder

First things first. Are these animals pedigreed. If not separate immediately. shins without pedigrees should never be bred. You have no idea if they carry genetic illnesses that can be passed on to the offspring. Second. If they are pedigreed, take the 2nd male out of the cage. Two...

    Lightest survived birth weight

Our newest tiny baby is from a litter of triplets. The sibs weighed in at 52 and 57 grams. He weighs only 23 grams. I am supplementing the entire litter to avoid fighting - the little guy got nipped on the nose already, but he is a fighter. When I discovered the birth the little one was in...

Minimum cage size for two females after group separation

I had a female attack another and create an injury just like what you described. It only took seconds and there was no forewarning. It happens when the two stand up to be bigger than the other. One can suddenly duck down to bite at the groin. I would not put the three back together again...

    a lot of clear discharge

Do not give baytril without a known infection. She may actually be in heat. Occasionally a female will have quite a bit of clear mucus that gets discharged during heat. This is usually clear, does not smell and disappears on its own in 2 -3 days. If it persists longer, get her checked by the...
