Free to good home. Livingston, Texas

Dessy is a standard female, about 4 years old. She normally eats Oxbow, though I had to put her on Pirina Pro rabbit food when funds got tight. She'll likely be back on Oxbow soon, though, because she hates this stuff. I also have about 75% of a large bale of timothy that she has for food and...

    Tools of your trade

If you build chin furniture, ledges, or toys do you have any favorite tools? Are there any brands or models you swear by? Are there any you've declared your sworn enemy? Likewise, if you could have any tool in the world, what would it be?

    Making hard decisions

The apartment seemed a little bigger today, because our family is smaller. I gave one of my dogs away yesterday, and as hard as it was, I think it was the best thing I could do for him. He needs to run, and was on the verge of going neurotic in our little apartment. We walked him as much as we...

    Wheat head vs oat spray?

I've seen wheat heads offered as acceptable chin treats, and I'm seeing oat sprays in the big box stores. Would these oat sprays also be an acceptable treat? I know they're both grains, but I wonder if there's a substantial difference between the two. It's so cute watching her navigate the...

Male to Female Ratio: Human addition!

I'm just randomly curious what the ratio of users is here. :)

One of the best things about chin treats...

Oh man, I love when it's time to order more flowers for Dessy's treats. The box came in today and now my house smells amazing! That is all. :dance3:

    Has anyone tried these?

I'm looking for an alternative to pet/grocery store hay, but I have yet to find a local producer I trust. How do the masses feel about the following? http://www.amazon.com/Standlee-Premium-Western-Forage-Timothy/dp/B00A7QG8IU/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t I've never heard of this brand at all, so I don't...

    Quarantine bites!

Just venting my frustration. I'm at the tail end of an upper respiratory infection, and this whole time I've quarantined myself from Dessy to make absolutely sure she didn't catch it. I'm lucky: my boyfriend just looked at me like I was crazy and accepted feeding duties. But I want to play...

    Willfull ignorance!

I work at one of the big box pet supply stores everyone hates. Despite this, I do my best to make sure people get the best information possible about their pets and their health. I have given the link to this site to probably a dozen chin owners. Usually they are happy for the information, if...

    How can you even tell?

When most mammals get overweight, it's obvious. That said, when I tried to look up obesity in chinchillas I got nothing whatsoever. So is it possible to tell is a chin is fat by looking? Or do they look the same as a healthy one that's especially large? Do comparative photos exist?

    Walnut litter?

I know using clay and paper litter is asking for impaction, but what about ground walnut shells? I figure if it's safe for her to use it might make cleaning her "litter" tray a little simpler. Also, how often should I be changing the shavings if I keep her on aspen? It seems like I'm tossing...

    Gag?

Tonight I gave Dessy a bit of her treat mix: a piece of crushed rose hip, a few oats, a juniper berry (dried), and a few lavender flowers (about half a teaspoon all told). She chewed the rose hip piece for a minute before making a gagging face twice, squeaking the second time. I was sure she...

    Cone of shame?

Dessy's eye is infected again, and she seems like she's constantly messing with it. I'm sure a cone of shame is out of the question, but are there any pointers to help it heal better/faster? I'm using the antibiotics the vet gave the the first time (all of three weeks ago).

    Bluegrass as a staple?

http://bunniesinneed.net/hay-nutritional-value-chart So we're about to move the land of bluegrass. Now I know it's used as a treat, and I read that a couple people use it as a timothy alternative when allergies hate them. That said, I wonder if the nutritional differences in that link up there...

    *nomnomnom* Huh? *clink*

I see this all the time. Dessy will be sitting on a chiller or a ledge gnawing away on a twig/cookie/wood toy, and then she freezes. She doesn't move at all for a moment, and then I hear the clink of her shew dropping out of her paw. It's like she forgets what she's doing, and usually she...

    Man those horror stories worked!

Dessy is a standard girl, who initially came from a hobby breeder. Once I decided I'd gotten the hang of one chinchilla, I started considering eventually breeding her once or twice to see if I could get a daughter out of her. Then I read the breeding horror stories, and saw the pictures. Then...

    Are these acceptable?

I've been looking into different treats, because who doesn't like spoiling their babies? How does the chin community feel about the following?: dehydrated celery broccoli, a rare baby carrot, and tiny pieces of sweet potato (my vet recommended these...) dried parsley carob beans dehydrated leeks...

    Lavender?

I've been looking around the interwebs for this and I'm getting conflicting information. Can chinchillas eat lavender? Some sites say it's great for them, some call it poisonous. What gives?
