How many pets do you have?

Just found out that we're taking delivery of a Kenyan Sand Boa today. It's a species I've always been interested in keeping, so I'm super excited!

    Cage liners

I'd recommend clipping it to the bottom pan. I wrap the fleece around the pan on all sides (sort of like how you'd make a bed with a flat, non-fitted sheet), then clip it at each corner to keep it in place. It completely covers the plastic and I haven't had any issues with my chin pulling up the...

    Cage liners

No, I just use multiple layers of fleece and it works great.

    Cage liners

And I haven't had any issue with my chin chewing the fleece, but every chin is different, of course.

    Cage liners

I just folded the fleece over so it's double-thick to be more absorbent (the second level of my cage is triple-layered to protect my girl's feet from the wire floor in her cage). You can buy binder clips online or at any office supply store. They're very inexpensive.

    Cage liners

I just made my own liners. You don't even have to sew, I just cut the fleece to size, and then I clip them on with metal binder clips. It's waaaaay cheaper than buying pre-made liners. It may not look quite as pretty, but it's perfectly functional. The liners off Etsy are usually hand-made...

New chin parent with a few questions!

Exciting news (at least for me)! I successfully picked Margaret up and held/carried her a short distance for the first time today! And I felt it went quite well. I've been trapping her in her dust bath to get her between her cage and playpen. I knew she'd get wise to it and it would stop...

    Oxbox Hammocks?

Pandamonium Pets has some great-looking stuff. I haven't ordered anything from them yet, but I'm sure I will once my girl's new cage arrives. I'd forgotten they had free shipping!

    Oxbox Hammocks?

Just make sure it's 100% fleece, including any lining, stuffing, fastening straps, borders, etc. A lot of store-bought hammocks use nylon webbing or something similar for the straps that attach to the hooks you clip to the cage. I don't know if that's true of the Oxbow ones or not, but if it...

    Custom wheel

We've decided to stick with wood for everything but the running surface. My friend is willing to try making an all-metal one, but she wants to do a little experimenting first. She's already started on the wood one and will hopefully have it finished next week! Then she'll experiment with...

Bedding / Is this mold or paint?

Oh yeah, if it's pine, that's a likely source of that blue staining (and seems much more likely than paint, I was trying to figure out how paint could have gotten on it). I'd assumed it was aspen. But I'd still err on the side of caution and not use it, just to be safe. I hate waste, but I...

Bedding / Is this mold or paint?

I'm honestly not sure what it is. It looks like mold to me in the first picture, but the second picture almost looks more like paint or some other type of pigment...? Either way, I'd say better safe than sorry. If it were me, I'd err on the side of caution and toss that bag. Even if it's paint...

    Travelling cage/carrier

I just tried to order the Martin's carrier (it seemed like a good size and design in spite of the plastic bottom, and I had a Martin's cage years ago for my rats that was fantastic, so I trusted it to be sturdier than some of the cheaper options).....but it says that Martin's is closed until...

    Portable coolbox idea

I don't know enough about electronics generally or those cool boxes to be able to comment on how well this would work in practice, but I think that so long as the coolbox didn't burn out, it might work. You might want to consider lining the inside with fleece or something so they won't chew it...

Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Chinchilla Food

Yeah, that doesn't sound like a great chin food. Most pet food made by that brand is pretty awful. Oxbow Essentials and Mazuri are considered the best pellets. If you go with Oxbow, just make sure you get their "Essentials" chinchilla food. They make a couple other types of chin food that has...

    Travelling cage/carrier

Yeah, Margaret chewed a hole in the cardboard carrier we took her home in. Just a small hole, not big enough to escape through....but the drive was also less than 10 minutes, so I have no doubt she could have escaped if she'd been in there for just a few more minutes. Ugh, that's concerning...

New chin parent with a few questions!

Yup, I know that any liners, hammocks, etc. need to be 100% fleece, including any stuffing, lining, fastening straps, etc. I'll probably make my own, but I used up all the fleece I had making liners for the Feisty Ferret, so I'll have to buy (or otherwise acquire) more fleece. I was thinking of...

    Travelling cage/carrier

Hello once again. I really do apologise for all the threads and questions, but Amethyst and others have been so helpful. It seems like whenever I feel like I'm starting to get my head around chin care, something else will crop up and I have yet more questions. I'm just so in love with Margaret...
