Our chinchilla had a prolapse issue so we brought him to the hospital. The vet removed a "tiny little" hair ring (which we we unable to find by ourselves) from our chinchilla and immediately his penis retracted successfully. However, one day later, his penis came out again and it still will not retract. What can be the possible cause? What should we do now? Our chinchilla seems to eat, drink and behave normally.

Maybe he is just cleaning it. However if it is out for a long time there may be another hair ring.

You should probably go back to the vet. My only idea is that there is another hair ring. I don’t know much about male chinchilla things though. I have a girl.

Thank you for your reply. We will bring him to see the vet again. Just wondering what are the possible causes. The vet said over the phone that our chinchilla may need a surgery... This is frightening.

Our chinchilla is nine years old and this is the first time he develops hair ring issue. Hard to image he has he same issue in a few days.

Your welcome. I find it weird that happened so quickly. Why does the vet think he needs surgery?

If it was me. I would make sure their is no other way to treat it before going into surgery. Surgery is very risky with small animals.

He did not explain the reasons. He probably needs to see our chinchilla again before making any suggestions.

Oh ok. I would definitely get his opinion because it is very weird that it prolapsed again.

A prolapsed penis can be an indication of pain. If it had been out for just a little while, you could try and gently place it back in the sheath with the use a very small amount of Neosporin (with no extra pain relief junk) to provide some lubrication. Hanging out for that long is a serious issue. He needs to see the vet.

We brought him to see the vet again yesterday. X-ray was performed, not stone or other abnormities were detected. The vet pushed his penis back as the first time. He suggested that if this happens again he could use stitches to partially close the foreskin. That does not seem like a very good idea to us.

Sadly, we saw his penis came out again today. I was able to push it back using lubrication. We worry that this is a indication of more serious issue (indication of pain?).

The vet we went to is suppose to be the best in the area for chinchilla.

Hi car fly did you bring him back to the vet? My Little guy has this happening too I'm getting him an appointment, he's 13 years old. There no way he can be put under for surgery. I'm just curious if you found out anything

No I did not bring him back to the vet. I pushed his penis back with lubrication as long as it came out. I did it almost daily for around 10 days. Finally his penis did not come out again and it is good for around 10 days now. Hopefully he has fully recovered.

I still don't know the cause of this issue.
