This is very puzzling. It did look very similar to a placenta and it didn't have an odor. Vienna's belly seems fine and she doesn't seem uncomfortable in anyway (but we all know how good they are at hiding it). I'd like to hear some more feedback.
On the morning of September 28th, my Vienna gave birth to a healthy hetero beige kit. There was a single placenta and minimal blood. The pregnancy was planned, so Vienna was already in a kit-proof cage by herself. The kit is healthy and on its way to gaining weight. Vienna is healthy as well...
Recently I had upped my crew to four chinchillas. With this increase, purchasing Oxbow Deluxe from Petsmart is no longer an option. It is just far too expensive.
I was curious that with Tradition being so close to Oxbow, is there any need for a gradual switch? Could I just cold turkey 'em? I...
With all this new info I plan to not buy a new cage. I'll use the two cages I have and if there is a problem of any sort with the boys and their dad, I'll just make that quick trip to the pet store.
Tabitha: the reason I planned to move Vienna rather than Snickers is because of the fact that...
Thank you so much for the clarification, Sycamore! I was under the impression that the mother wouldn't wean her kits by herself (figured that it had to do with something about being in captivity).
So, just to clarify, when the 8 week mark hits I don't need to do anything to the female kits...
If I was to only have two cages, I couldn't wean the female kits from their mother. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the point of weaning to physically separate the kits from the mother to stop nursing and to promote independence and eating of a mature chin diet?
I have experimented pulling...
I currently have two holding cages for Snickers and Vienna (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4191242). With breeding time nearing, I will need to purchase another cage for the kits. I understand that cages with a wire bottom like the two I currently have don't compliment the...
Note:
Vienna's poops are completely normal and she drinks water that is obtained from the same source (but using a different bottle).
Food is Oxbow pellets, hay is Oxbow timmothy and a pinch of Oxbow alfalfa.
After taking a closer look, it seems like there are a couple strands of hair in...
GAHHHH!
Tonight when I went to let Snickers out for his daily playtime, I noticed his poops on his shelves were peculiar. They are light brown, round, and hard. I wasn't sure but I thought I remembered reading that these were symptoms of constipation. I googled it and unfortunately found out...
This question has been a big cloud hovering over my head since the moment I considered breeding. I realized that I would have to adapt according to the answer to this question no matter what if I was to breed. Now that I am actually getting closer to introducing the two, I'm making those "last...
I have read that when 8 weeks come along and you wean your kits that you have to separate the males from the litter. What's the reason for this?
I have two cages (let's call them A and B). My plan is to bring Vienna to A with Snickers. Once Vienna hits that 90ish day mark I'll put her in B to...
