    She won't eat hay

Im happy to see another Canadian on these forum boards :) I just wanted to add in, there are times when an owner may do everything absolutely correct (proper diet, enviroment etc) but just like humans sometimes things can happen that are beyond our control and cause issues for the chin. I...

    what do i do now?

Im no expert but I personally dont see a problem with having two chins, in seperate cages in the same room. I have heard to help with bonding and introductions you can also put their cages close to each other. So they can at least meet with their noses, and get used to each other. Maybe try...

Dental Disease - What can be done? Teeth Removal Possible? (Xray pictures enclosed)

My chin for the past 6 months or so has been battling issues with her right eye. It went from an abcess (that we drained for a month) on the top of the eye, to a bulging eye (that got better for a short time), to a corneal ulcer that is also bulging her eye currently. Her ulcer now after about...

    Corneal Ulcer/Conjunctivitis - Treatment Options?

Wow 8 months! That makes me feel a bit better, its been about 1.5 weeks and our chin seems to have less discharge? But generally it looks marginally better, but no worse. I was worried about why was it taking so long to heal, but wow 8 months! I totally agree with you for the ointment! The...

Abcess (Retrobulbar Abscess - Bulging eye) - Good antibiotic? Baytril Alternatives?

Hi tunes :) Unfortunately yah.....I dont know where to begin to explain whats going on Her eye was looking pretty good for a short time, but then it started to look like it was "smudging" on the surface, like her eye wasnt a smooth glassy glossy and there was something stuck in it. Then there...

    She won't eat hay

Not sure if you want to give a try either, but in lieu of Timothy hay, Oxbow tends to have a variety of other hays. My chin is currently not feeling well, and we have been mixing in a bit of alfafa hay with her timothy hay to get her to eat more. Alfafa hay she seems to really love, though its...

Abcess (Retrobulbar Abscess - Bulging eye) - Good antibiotic? Baytril Alternatives?

So for the past few months my chin has been having one issue after another in one of her eyes. She initially had an abcess above her eye, and now her eye has started to bulge. With this eye bulge its also causing other issues (corneal ulcer and conjuctivitis currently). I just got a new vet...

    Blind or infected eye?

I cant advise you on what that looks like, but I can tell you that it does not appear to be a corneal ulcer - Just so you can try and rule that out. My chin currently has an eye issue, and was diagnosed with a corneal ulcer You will notice that the top of her eye, its not smooth and glassy...

    Corneal Ulcer/Conjunctivitis - Treatment Options?

So my chin has been going through a number of health issues in one of her eyes. Its morphed from being an abcess above the eye, to a bulging eye and now apparently a corneal ulcer with conjunctivitis - This is all happened for the past few months. I just got a new vet, and they suspect that the...

    Chinchilla - Bulging/Protruding eye?

Hi Tunes! Baytril is a harsh antibiotic. Given the fact that she has already lost weight and is having health issues, Baytril (for me) would be the last resort and 3 weeks seems excessive. Whenever I've used it I've never gone beyond 10 days and with Trimethoprim sulfa never beyond 14 days...

    Chinchilla - Bulging/Protruding eye?

Hi Pepperpot - Many thanks for the reply Not sure why I wasnt notified of your reply - I was just logging back in to give an update and seek more advice. We brought our chin to the vet on April 21 (few days after I posted). Unfortunately due to covid-19, we were not allowed in the exam room...

Baytril - How to give via Subq - Not Orally?

My chin unfortunately seems to potentially be having another issue with an abcess. After bringing her to the vet they recommended that I start a course of Baytril/Enrolfloxacin. I have read and heard about supplementing with Acidophilus which I will pick up tomorrow when stores are open again...

    Chinchilla - Bulging/Protruding eye?

Our chinchilla recently went through a medical issue back in Jan-Feb 2020 (I noted the thread here for the history: Chinchilla bald patch above eye?). The vet basically found an abcess above her right eye, and we had to drain it and treat it with a topical antibiotic for a while. Since then...

    Chinchilla bald patch above eye?

Thanks for the advice! We took it slow and didnt change her diet, or give her extra treats. So far from Feb 10, her lowest weight was about 528 grams. Its been about 2 months now and shes bounced a bit back up to 560-570g Though I am going to make another post slightly related to this issue...
