    Sneezing without mucus or drooling

Thank you for the reply. My husband was gone on business for a few weeks so I was hoping it was more depression that led him to not chewing. He will destroy a lava rock but won’t touch his apple sticks. He will eat pellets and hay still but he is just not wanting to chew on anything else.

    Sneezing without mucus or drooling

Hi Everyone, I‘m hoping some experienced chin owners could possible help me. My chinnie started sneezing and not acting himself roughly a month ago. I immediately took him to the vet and they diagnosed him with URI. He was on antibiotic, probiotics and critical care 2x per day for 10 days...

Moving (out of state) with chinchillas

Hi! Last year we moved from Indiana to Pennsylvania with our 17 year old chinnie at the time. First, I’d check to see if there’s an exotic restrictions in the state. Some states make exotic pets illegal. Next, your vet will need to notify the State Vet that’s he’s leaving, fill out a certificate...

    Sick chinchilla?

First, I hope your chin feeling better. I had a similar ”flare up“ with my chinnie a few years ago. I agree with getting oxbow critical care to help during this time under vet approval. If your chin had diarrhea it’s most likely a dietary & possibly a bacterial issue. If you feel confident in...

    Change in Bathroom behavior

My little guy is 13 & has never really been one to pee on his ledges. Occasionally, it would happen but never with any consistency. Recently, within in the last 2-3weeks he has repeatedly been peering on one ledge. No change in poop, water or eating consumption, regular amounts of urine, and...

    Free feed or scheduled?

We feed Gohan at night after he's woken up. We give him roughly 2-3 tablespoons of pellets & hay (which we check & re-fill in the morning). My guy eats when it's served, then eats again before going to be in the am & he also does a mid-afternoon snack. I support allowing him to eat whenever he...

What are the signs of old age?

It all depends on what was your chins normal behavior. I've not changed the brand of his pellets (Mazuri) or hay since aging. Both mazuri & oxbox are great for the lifespan of a chinchilla. I noticed he didn't need to run as long & as often as when he was young. He would stay out for as long as...

    Sleep Barking

My little guy will bark in his sleep. Usually I wait to see if he does it more than once. I try to comfort him with my voice first but if he continues I or my husband get up & pet him. This majority of the time is enough & he'll go back to sleep. However, he will also do this sometimes while...

    Bonding Frustration

I was wondering how things were going for you. Yes, I'm thinking the previous environment wasn't very attentive which would lead them to take even a little longer to trust. I would definitely put the blanket down on the floor & let him jump all over you. This builds trust plus my little guy...

    Thinning fur

I agree, chins can drop a lot of fur due to weather or new fur coming in. Last year, around this same time my chin had patchy fur with gaps where I could see his skin. He never had the issue before so I took him to the vet. Check for redness on the exposed skin, monitor the growth of the...

Acquired 2 very old, neglected chinchillas

You're doing all the right things! Keep talking to them every time you're in the room & they're awake. It's great that they're already taking treats from you & wanting to explore your hand. At this point you may be able to build trust with them just by giving both verbal & physical attention...

    Senior Chinchilla & Anesthesia concerns

No, he's not showing any teeth issues (ex. No drooling, no rubbing mouth, squeaks, etc) but its been 5yrs since his last set. Plus a few weeks ago he just stopped eating. He was drinking but would touch his pellets & would only eat hand fed hay. Took him to the vet as soon as I noticed, she said...

    Senior Chinchilla & Anesthesia concerns

Yes, I'm sure that whats the vet meant b/c she said it wouldn't effect him for too long. Thank you for the advice about sevo, I'll make sure to mention that specifically. It's just a struggle to decide what to do when he's in great health.
