Do you need a license? What are the requirements. Freddy's breeder had a lot of chinchillas but no license. Is he required to have one or no? I just want to know as we were planning on going with him again for our next chinchilla but not if he's not breeding as he should.

You can have as many chinchillas in breeding as you want and the USDA will not care or require a license. They only care and require the license when you start selling them to wholesalers and pet stores.

If you sell your chins privately, directly to the new owner you do not require a license.

If you sell to or as a broker, so pet stores, brokers who sell to pet stores or research, etc, you are required to have a license. Which generally runs about $300 a year I believe.

Licenses are required for hedgehog breeders if they have over 3 females in breeding, I believe? But not for chinchillas.

The license for chinchillas is based on the amount of sales you have. The more dollars you sell the higher the cost of the license.

Ok I know he only sells to homes so that means he's ok than.

Yes, 3 or more hedgehog females in breeding requires a license if I remember correctly, same goes for sugar gliders.
I wonder why the USDA holds that with hedgies and sugies, but not chinchillas.

Chinchillas are not considered exotic by the US government. They are domesticated livestock that have entered the pet trade.

Makes them slightly easier to cross the Cad. border with, but not much.

You do not need the USDA license if you wholesale and have a store front.

Wait I have 3 female hedgehogs and a male but I don't breed. They were just hedgies people didn't want anymore. Do I need a license if they are of breeding age or just if they are bred?

As Show-MeChins said, only if they breed and as I said, 'breeding females.' As long as they're not being bred or housed with the males, you're safe. Or if the male is neutered then housed with the females that's safe too. As long as no breeding is going on.
