Hello, my female chinchilla recently gave birth to a kit. I separated the father from the female chinchilla and kit and he seems to be looking for them. I am trying to keep it this way for a week. What should I do?

Keep the male separate from the female from now on, not just a week. If you put him back with the female they can end up breeding again, being pregnant again while still raising a kit is hard on the mother and gives her no time to recover, which can kill her. If the kit is male it can often end up living with the father once it's weaned, otherwise the male may need to live alone. If the kit is female it can normally stay with the mother for life. The other option if you want them to beable to go back together (especially if the kit is female and you want them all to live together) would be to have the male neutered. It's risky and does come with a real chance of things going wrong during or after the surgery and him dying so you want a vet that is very experienced with chinchillas to do it. If he survives, and there are no complications that extend the recovery, after 8 weeks he can be reintroduced to the female and the kit.

Thank you very much. It is hard because the male and female chinchillas were closely bonded.

@Amethyst He hasn't been eating the pellets and have very small feces. Should I take him to the vet? I believe this is because he is separated from his mate.

Smaller poop is most often a sign of gas, chins can't fart (they pass gas as they poop) I would try some infant gas drops and see if that helps. If he has a gas bubble that can also make him not want to eat. Get some infant gas drops, you want 20mg of Simethicone per dose, which is normally around 0.3ml (you can't really overdose, excess is just peed out), every 8-12 hours. If he doesn't seem to be improving within about 12 hours then I would get him to the vet. If he stops pooping all together, even before 12 hours, get him to the vet right away.
