This thread is for information pertaining to the railroad of the rescues. Please limit posts in this section to that topic only.

Please also remember, until the applicants for adoption have been approved, any and all railroad routes may change somewhat. It is most definitely not set in stone.

I am going to railroad from Washington DC to New Jersey. If anyone in New Jersey OR any states nearby would like me to pick some up for them please let me know. I currently only have 4 carriers but will try and see if I can borrow more.

At this point I will be picking up 4. 2 for me, which will be available for adoption after a certain period of time and 2 are going to Barb at Mt. Zion. She also also indicated that she has someone who does rescue work that may be interested so that number may increase.

I do not have the cages to hold them, so when this goes down, you will need to come to me within the day. I prefer not to leave these guys in plastic carriers too long, as they have been through enough.

CARRIERS:

Carriers will be provided. That said, I am not overly happy with them but they will do, IMO for 1-2 days. They have been approved by Dr Brown and by my vet for car transport lasting 1-3 days. They are made of plywood and each hole is 8x6 and 8" high. The front is half screen. The tops are either full length or half length and held down by a phillips head screw. The are fairly safe for chins on the inside. The outside is a bit rough. There may be wood edges and screen wire that can poke upholstry or hands without care. I suggest a blanket or something to protect the car and railroad gloves for your hands even though it may be overkill. Each hole will have aspen bedding and each chin will have a pumice stone and timmy hay cubes.

There was no other quick and inexpensive way of doing this. We will need to watch for chewers. These carriers are disposable and are not meant for reuse.

Drivers should bring whatever carriers they can with them that they can retrieve after emptying. Chins can be moved into them where possible. This is especially important for the NC/VA/NJ chins.

All the southern route chins will be in my regular carriers to New Orleans and then in shipping carriers to go east.

More on transport to follow. I wanted to get this posted to see what alternatives there may be.

Please post transport questions here for the time being until we get down to route specific details.

I'm in the middle of Nebraska and can help within a couple hours if needed!

I'm not sure what the status on the hedgies is, if I need to meet a gal in KS for them or how the time lines will coincide, but possibly can bring them from that way this way, or what not.

There is still a route coming through Nashville, correct? As of right now (weather permitting) I can drive within an hour of the city limits to get them here. But if they get that close, the driver may have to come through Nashville anyway.

I'm not sure who is driving from TN to KY?

Noone's 100% sure on who's doing what yet. The adopters have to be approved before anyone will know where they are going for sure. IF chins are coming from Nashville north, I believe I'm supposed to be involved in that transport.

I can drive from Fredericksburg to D.C. to meet Michelle (mishellyshel)

no worries Melissa, this is me, I am going to pick up in the burg and bring them home with me and will drive as far as I can north to meet Mishellyshel. However I have a rather small car, the most cat carriers I can fit will be 4. If more chins need to travel to Washington DC, Melissa (ilovemytwochins) can follow me to my home and chins can be pick up from there.

I am collecting as many free/cheap cages as I can, so far I have one :( but whatever I get can go with you if needed

I just thought about this are you picking up 4 from me? I thought I was picking up a total of 4, one I am keeping and 3 boys for you? I might be able to squeeze 5 cats carriers in my car (I can do a test run tomorrow) if you are getting 4 from me (and I can't fit them in my car) that is fine, we will just use Melissa! Or they can stay in the wooden holders Rick mentioned since it sounds like I might be able to fit more of that type in my car. Sometimes it sucks to have a two door civic!

I'll be meeting in either St. Louis or Normal, Il., going N on I-39, meeting Stacy on the way into Rockford for Wisc. bound chins, and meeting Kristy along I-90 on the way back towards O'Hare.
If none to Wisc., I'll be NE on I-55 to I-355 N to I-90 E - still a lot of area!
Anyone else along that route - please E-Mail Rick at NOLA chins, [not a P.M.] for acceptance, if you can take any!
From what I understand, these are all under a year old, and there's a few left!

suzi/melissa/anyone in the DC/Baltimore area:

After Rick approves all applications, I may be picking up at least 6 chins. 4 will be for Barb at Mt. Zion Chins & 2 for me. I have carriers to cover all of them and an suv to carry them all or more. If there is anyone in the surrounding areas of NJ that is approved by Rick and would like me to pick up their chins, please fill out the forms and send to Rick's email.

If there is anyone is the DC area that would be willing to help with the railroad that would be fantastic. we have VA to DC covered or even a bit further but we are trying to get them from DC to any state closer to NJ. WE would require transport only and would only be donating your time to help these guys get closer to having a home (be it temporary or permanent).

Right now, we need help from St Louis going north into IL. I appeciate Rick(man)'s offer, but it is a problem paying for expenses and a cell phone for him.

The chins and some hedgies are good from Memphis to St Louis. Then we need transport to Normal, IL, and on to the N. part of IL. I don't think we have any applications from WI or MN.

Any carriers that can come with the driver(s) are a plus so that the chins can be taken out of the carriers ASAP.

Drivers need relaible cars, cellphones and flexibility in scheduling. We need continuous transport if possible. The chins will be coming through IL late in the day. If they have to overnight, they will need warmth and to be dipersed early the next day.

The Memphis east route needs work. Right now, it looks like I will be driving to Nashville and meeting Amanda who will take chins for KY and IN people. Unless it falls on a couple of dates, we need transport eastward. We have approved group homes in Roxboro, NC and in Fredericksburg, VA. There will be approved homes farther north toward DC and NJ.
Transport then is needed from Nashville eastward to NC and then north to VA or this route can split into a VA and a NC one. I will also drive this route if needed.

It looks like we are good from Fredericksburg north.

If I drive to NC or VA, I will likely then go south to Jax to Crysta and then to Pensacola on my way home. This isn't that bad. I will have the same van and can carry travel cages - mine, Aimee's and Kara's - which are much bigger so chins will have some space in rotation.

Tamara in Dallas has already picked up a bale of Aspen and I will bring hay and hay cubes, bottled R/O water + bottles and chew stuff. Pellets will be available for any still not eating hay.

All drivers may be asked to carry a couple or more hedgies. These will be in small boxes and will need to stay at 75F or so. Food and care instructions will be provided.

It would be a very good idea for all drivers to have a thermometer. It would also be wise to know where the chinnie vets are along your route as well as contacting them before hand to put them in the know. Emergency medical expenses will be taken care of.

More to follow.

St. Louis is 2hr and 45 min from Normal IL (where I live). I will make the whole drive if necessary, but if the St. Louis contact could meet me along the way that would be GREATLY appreciated.

-I am available Mondays after 4:30, Tuesday-Fridays after 2:30 and all day Saturday and Sunday. I will not be available at all on Friday Jan. 22 and Saturday Jan 23 (I can't reschedule my plans) I can hold over night but I don't have enough cages so they'd have to stay in their carriers. It's only about an hour North from me to Stacy (furrylovables).

Let me know what I can do.

I Will, I WILL!! I'm in Annapolis, but DC isn't but 45 minutes away from me - I would be willing to help pick up in DC and could meet you possibly in Delaware. Let me know.....I miss my guys - and would LOVE to help!!!

Ok, here is the latest, sill subject to change and, of course, if/when we get the chins.

5 chins for TX and 2 for KS leave from Dallas. I will take the rest east to Memphis.

I am hoping to find transport for chins/hedgies north from Memphis to St Louis. The Bunderground may be able to help. If this is possible, the St Louis driver will take them north towards the Chicago area. At this time there are 8 approved for this route. While there is transport further, there are no WI/MI/MN applicants at this time.

If the above happens, I will continue on to Nashville and give Amanda 7 chins; 4 for KY and 3 for IN.

I will then drive to Fredericksburg, VA and unload 12 to Sonia, 2 more for VA, 7 for NJ and then I'll head south with 5 for NC, maybe more.

If I have enough rental time on the van I'll go south to Jax with 11, then to Pensacola with 2.

Total: 61

Where will the drop off in KS be? I could head that way possibly if a couple need fostered, if everything goes as planned I may be that way for hedgies anyway.
