Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Oh no! Poor little Chalupa. I am so sorry. I know how hard this is as so many of us here have lost little ones, too. Hang in there.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

CWilson: Do you mind if I ask where you are located and who is providing vet care? It sounds like Chalupa is in very good hands (both your own and the vet's) and that the vet has a lot of technology available at their clinic. It might help other chin owners who live in your area if they...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I'm keeping you and Chalupa in my thoughts. Motility drugs and stomach massages can help when the gut has stopped moving. There are other forum members with a lot of hands-on experience with this issue who can guide you. I haven't had this (gut stasis) happen yet, so I'm sorry that I can't...

    chin not eating

The Special Species (i.e. exotics) vets at the UW Vet School have told me that chinchillas can become 'addicted' to hand feeding and will eventually prefer it to eating on their own. You could try weaning her off of the hand-feedings by cutting back by 50% for a few days. Keep weighing her...

    violent seizures

I know you posted this 5 days ago, but how is your chinchilla? Please take him to a vet if you have not already. Low blood sugar can cause seizures. If he is older, he might not be absorbing nutrients as well as he should even if his appetite is strong. Don't throw in the towel before having...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Any updates on his condition? Did they re-check his teeth? If he was eating only Critical Care for a few months, his teeth are probably badly overgrown. Teeth overgrow quickly if they don't eat solid food. (My own chinchilla just had his teeth re-trimmed today after a too-slow-transition...

    Procaine benzylpenicillin

Update: Arthur has fatty liver disease. I have been instructed to feed him Critical Care 3 to 4 times a day for the next several weeks until his liver heals. His liver will be tested again in about a week. I was able to get ~22 cc of Critical Care in him since I brought him home at this evening.

    Procaine benzylpenicillin

Sycamore, Yes. I'm giving him critical care everyday. I tried to scale back so he would eat on his own, but that isn't happening. He hadn't even touched his treats this morning. He also struggles more than he has in the past when I feed him. He is staying overnight at the clinic and they...

    Chinchilla won't eat after dental

Sophia, How is Frizzles doing? Is he eating on his own? Best wishes.

    Procaine benzylpenicillin

Thanks so much, Dawn. On this occasion, penicillin was prescribed because one of his molars had become loose and supposedly penicillin can assist with re-stabilizing the tooth (I'm not sure how but maybe through anti-inflammatory effects???) Dr Mans hasn't called me back yet with the...

    Procaine benzylpenicillin

Thank you Dawn. Did Dr Koch ever explain why not to give it? Procaine PenG has been used a lot in chinchilla studies on otitis media --maybe that is how it was discovered that some chinchillas can be sensitive to it. I just can't find anything that explicitly defines "sensitivity" or...

    Procaine benzylpenicillin

My chinchilla had dental surgery 2 weeks ago (Jan 14) but it was performed by a different vet because Dr. Mans (who usually sees him) was not on clinic that week. I was instructed to give him subQ injections of procaine benzylpenicillin once every 5 days which caught me off guard because he has...

Blue SealShow Hutch Deluxe Rabbit Food

Is this the food that people are claiming is easier for malo chins to eat? http://www.countrymax.com/Blue-Seal-Show-Hutch-Deluxe-Rabbit-Food/ I have a 13 year old male who has reabsorbed a few molars and recently lost an incisor. He eats more slowly than in the past and is, quite frankly...

    Calf manna formula change?

Dawn, I called Manna Pro and the representative told me that it sounded like the anise wasn't added to that particular batch. (Apparently anise seed gives the pellets the dark red color, too.) She was really helpful and is sending me a refund check. I'll check with the tractor supply website...

    Calf manna formula change?

Hi and thanks for replying. There is no damage to the bag. The manufacture date is 6/09/15 which is fresher than the January pellets that I have left (and the chins still love).

    Calf manna formula change?

I've been giving my chinchillas a few calf manna pellets each day for a few years. Back in January, I ordered a couple bulk pounds from an online vendor and was sent a product that seemed "different" --it was very light red in color and lacked the unmistakeable anise scent of calf manna. My...

    Questions on apple wood preparation

Thanks Amethyst. Now that I don't have to boil the wood, I won't have to wait until the weather cools off and my boys will get a fresh batch of wood in the next couple days.

    Questions on apple wood preparation

In the past, I prepared organic apple wood by: 1). soaking and scrubbing in hot water 2). boiling for 30-45 minutes 3) baking at 300 F for at least 45 minutes to dry My question is whether or not it is necessary to boil the wood if it has already been soaked and well-scrubbed. The smell of...

    WI vets?

Mikaela: An appointment at the UW vet school is about $80 and $45 for each follow up (if needed). Some people have had trouble getting appointments with the special species department if they are new clients, but I'm not sure why. Dr. Mans is fantastic so I hope you can get in. He isn't on...

    Chinchilla rejecting Oxbow pellets

Great input everybody, thanks. Lily: The freshness aspect is a great point. I used to purchases the 5 lb bags of Oxbow but just recently began ordering the 10 lbs bags because it was much cheaper. It was about midway through the first the 10 lb bag that he got picky. I divided the 10 lb bag...
