    Hay Holder?

I took a small cardboard box, tore off the top and one side, and used safety pins to fasten it to the cage. It's still a bit messy, but this was something I came up with as I was supposed to be leaving my house. My chinchilla is too picky to eat his hay out of a bowl. I'm very surprised at how...

    Flying saucer hardware wanted

Thank you for the pics! I went to Lowe's and their U bolts are much longer and the threading doesn't allow me to tighten them enough. So now I have to figure out another way to attach it to the cage, or find something to wedge between the bars and nuts that they won't pull out!

    Water Bottle Help!

Haha!! Punishing themselves because they're mad at you! I know you said you're not comfortable with the other kind of water bottles, but I totally recommend them. I wasn't too sure about it at first, but I have 3 of those glass ones pictured above and hate them. I only use one now. I have this...

One of chin's ears is laid back?

Oh good!! I've never seen them do that. I came home today and his other ear was down instead haha! But he was perky as ever!

One of chin's ears is laid back?

Woke up this morning to check on/feed the chinchillas because I fell asleep super early and didn't do it last night like I normally do. I usually leave at 7am so I never see them at this time of morning, so I think I woke them up. None of them were too energized, but one had one ear perked up...

    Flying saucer hardware wanted

Really? I remember it being a lot more than that. Well, I feel silly now! Thanks!

    Flying saucer hardware wanted

I've managed to misplace the hardware for my chinchillas' flying saucer. I know I won't ever find it again, and I don't even remember what it required. I hooked it up when I first got it about 7 years ago and hadn't ever looked at it since. I just remember that there were many pieces to it. But...

    Chin Chirps?

Poor baby! :( As already stated, he's probably just getting used to the very new environment. Was he housed with other chins when you got him, or is he used to being by himself? Also, does he have a few places in his cage to hide? My chins would be lost without their houses and tubes, lol...

    Metal pans

One of my chinchillas loves to pee anywhere but in the litter pan, so one of mine looks destroyed, too. But I use fleece so I only see it when I remove the fleece to clean it. It's unfortunate but it still does its job! I also recommend ledges on shelves! My chinchillas have chewed all theirs...

    Could a chinchilla develop diabetes?

Thank you for supplying me with the symptoms. All I really know about diabetes in humans are the three poly's and the fruity breath!! He has always urinated wherever his little bladder desires, but I noticed today that one of his fleece-lined ledges was soaked, and decided that I've silently...

    Recent change in behavior

While I can absolutely see how this can be frustrating, I can't help but giggle at the thought of her taking desperate measures to just get under that couch!! Are there other pieces of furniture in the room that she could crawl under? I'm thinking that maybe she does want to hide and since she...

    Could a chinchilla develop diabetes?

I adopted one of my chinchillas a couple of years ago from a woman who fed him more treats than pellets. I changed his pellets (mazuri) and he got on fine, but recently I've noticed that he urinates SO much and he is the only one of my chinchillas who doesn't just pick one spot, so it's...

    Do chins need light?

Thank you, I was hoping for a knowledgeable response sooner or later! They are more active during the day from living in my bedroom originally, so I'll continue to keep the light on during the day and look into full spectrum lighting!

    Do chins need light?

*I don't know another way to word this topic, but I don't want to make it sound like I want to lock my chinchillas in a closet* I just moved to NY and my chinchillas have been placed in the basement. I'm really excited about this, because in SC the temperatures were getting very high! However...

Does your chinchilla make your skin itch after holding?

It's probably the dust; you may be sensitive or allergic to it. I can't hold my chinchillas close to my face or touch my face after holding them or I have an allergic reaction, which I've noticed is much worse right after they've bathed. I'd just recommend washing your hands/arms/wherever...

How do Chinchillas do in 3's?

At one point I had five males together. Two were father/son (but kept separate prior to my adoption) and the other three were unrelated (though two had been previously bonded for ~1yr). They lived fine for a while, then one night one from my original pair attacked the other (one bite, blood...

    Renting with a Chinchilla- Tips?

When I had a prospective apartment I asked the landlord about pets because of my cat, and he asked a few questions about him (to which I honestly replied that he's always used the litter box and sleeps 23 hours a day.) in the paper application I wrote I had "one cat, an aquarium, and chinchillas...

    Is maple wood safe?

Thank you! That does make sense, in the way that live oak is toxic with its antifreeze. I just moved from SC to NY and there are so many new types of trees and it's all untreated forest, so I am really excited to start making them treats. After ensuring they're safe, of course.

    Is maple wood safe?

I tried figuring out if maple wood is safe for chinchilla consumption, but all of the lists I found said it is toxic. However, those lists also often include woods like birch and others that this site says is safe. I have given my chinchillas tons of birch and they have never had any issues, so...
