Excellent. I suspected this was your method, and had been my plan, but I wanted to make sure it was a reasonable method before starting out. I'm thinking I may use metal zip ties instead of plastic ones for my cage, but the end result should be pretty much the same.

I've also noticed mine change up how much their eating depending on the weather. Changes of seasons they tend to slow down a bit.

Both of mine pull the covers off their tunnels too. Even double wrapping doesn't help. I'd suggest switching to metal tubes, personally. I found some old metal cans at a thrift store for 50 cents a piece, cut the bottom off, filed the edges nice and smooth, and used those. Now if they pull off...

You might want to do some research on clicker training. One of my boys is really into it, and its a fun way to interact with them, if you don't have a whole lot of out of cage toys, or space for them to roam.

You can try covering it with fleece, but I think most people just replace it. Either by tiling the bottom of the cage with marble tiles, or buying bass pans. The link to order them can be found here.
