I would say a trip to the vet would be a good choice. In general, people should not buy chinchillas from pet stores like petsmart or petco. These pet store chains treat their chinchillas (and all their animals) very badly and don't take proper care of them which results in sick animals. Many...
Chinchillas have very delicate respiratory systems and are very susceptible to catching respiratory illnesses from humans. You should not handle your chin or let anyone else handle him if they are sick. It's also a good idea to always wash your hands before handling your chin or your chins food...
It doesn't look like anything serious and will probably resolve on its own. Best thing to do it just keep an eye on it and your chin. If you notice your chin is becoming increasingly bothered by it or the affected area gets worst then it'd probably be time to see a vet.
Ellie is a 2 year old chinchilla and I have had her since she was 2 months old.
She is a very loving chinchilla and has always been well behaved when in her cage. She makes the typical amount of noise and gets into mischievous here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary. Then, at the...
My chin goes into those frozen stances or what I like to call "day dream mode" sometimes, but she is perfectly fine and healthy. I think that's just something that they do. She'll run around, stop and freeze for a while as if she's hypnotized, and then go right back to being her hyper crazy...
She's a cutie! Just continue giving her unlimited pellets, fresh hay, and water and she should be fine!
Also, getting her a little bed or something fluffy to sleep in will help keep her warm and happy :)
Hi Scottf,
Is she eating, drinking, and behaving like normal? Sometimes chinchillas' eyes will get irritated from things like bedding or their dust baths and it will clear up on it's own. Since you said you touched it and it wasn't damp that makes me think her eye got irritated, her body...
I have a variety of treats for my chin that include:
Goji berries
Hawthorn Berries
Rose Buds
Hibiscus
Chamomile
Calendula
Red Clover
Green Oat Tops
Cheerios
and occasionally I will give her a sunflower seed or two :)
Did you happen to recently move things around in your chins cage?
My chin started doing this too all of a sudden, and started using her little hay trough as a restroom. I got rid of the flat hay trough I was using and purchased a new bamboo bowl, and since it's raised higher off the ground than...
Hi All,
I have had my female chin for almost a year now and from the beginning she has always used her designated litter box to go pee. Even when she is out of her cage playing, she will go back to her cage when she needs to go.
However, in the past two weeks she has peed twice on my bed. I...
Hiya!
I read that you can help chinchillas clean some of the dirt out of their ears with oil and cotton balls. Before I try anything though I'd love some input since there seems to be mixed reviews online about what oils are okay to use.
1) Should I clean the inside of my chinchilla's ears or...
I only have one chinchilla and do not plan on getting another one any time soon. Is it really that bad for a chinchilla to live alone? I know they are social creatures and in the wild they live in larger groups. My chinchilla gets love and attention everyday and is let out for hours at a time on...
Thanks for your input!
I assumed it was because she was annoyed with me, but she had never made that sound before when I have done this to her in the past. I guess she is just becoming more vocal these days!
Hiya,
I have a chinchilla that turned 6 months at the end of April. I have been free-feeding her oxbow pellets since I got her at 2 months. However, I read that at 6 months I am supposed to cut her down to 2 tablespoons a day.
I have tried this a couple of times and she eats it all very...
