Is Douglas fir okay to use as shelving? My Home Depot only has "Select pine" that costs $30 a board, and Doug fir.

I'm going to lower tomorrow to see if they have any regular old untreated kd pine, but if not, I just want to know if it's okay. I haven't been able to find a clear answer, and I don't want to harm my future chin! Thanks!

Fir is fine, so long as it's kiln dried just like pine. Pine, spruce, and fir are commonly harvested together and labeled PSF, just make sure it's kiln dried, normally labled/stamped KD somewhere on the wood. I have used PSF wood in my cage for years now. Another option that I know some have had better luck finding is poplar. Also here is a basic list of safe wood http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34 if you want to look for other options.
