Default Pogo the chinchilla. My sweet little boy.

Tuesday at around 3:30 I accidentally stepped on my little boys tail while I was cleaning his cage. In a panic I lifted my foot and I put my other foot down which landed on his body hard. I fell down as it happened.

I don't know how I will ever forgive myself. I'm usually always so careful when he's out I just can't believe it. He could barely walk and his little body was twisted but he still just wanted to cuddle in close to me to feel safe and warm.

We took him to the vets here. The X rays showed nothing. No broken bones or internal bleeding. They poked him for pain response and he didnt respond to anything but he could move his back legs so he was not paralyzed. He made no sounds of distress at any point in time. He was just a brave chin, letting them do anything to him. They did not know what was wrong. Possibly trama to the spine or a fractured diaphragm. But like I said nothing was broken and they couldn't tell much from the xrays. They gave him a shot of anti inflammatory and told us to go home and monitor or we could go to the 24 hour emergency clinic in calgary. I wanted to do everything I could for him. We drove the three hours to calgary. He was so limp and just cuddling into my arm the whole way there. He would still smile when i would scratch him in the right spot even though he must have been so scared, stressed and in pain. When we got there they did more x rays and figured that he had a displaced hip. He was moving more and willing to eat a little bit of his food by that time so we were optimistic. We were going to take him to an exotic specialist for an operation in the morning to get his leg put back in place.

During that night his breathing became laboured and he went into cardiac arrest. He died on the table. They tried their best to bring him back. They don't know exactly why it happened. Either he reacted badly to the fluids they put him on last night because of a pre-existing unknown heart problem or his lungs were severely bruised and he just didn't show signs of it until much later.

I loved him so much. He was such a smart and loving little guy. He was loved by many on my youtube page showing off how smart and special he was. He didn't deserve to die this way. He was a perfectly healthy and happy chin. I thought he would become an old man with me. He was only about 8 years old. I can't believe I did this. Remember to always shuffle around your chins when they are out. In a split second the impossible can happen.

Rest in peace my special boy. You meant the world to me and I'm so sorry.

I am sorry for seeing this a little late..
But I am in tears right now! What a tragic, heartbreaking story.
I feel like I knew him in a way. I had watched your videos with him before, and have shared them with people before I got my chinchilla. He was an incredible little guy <3 I am so sorry for your loss. ((Hugs)) Pogo knows you love him very much.
