Default Fur ball

I have read about fur balls and discussions as to whether they truly existed.
I saw one today that was removed by surgery from a female chin, @700 gms. It was about the size of a quarter. Vet said it was the first he has seen in over 20 years of practicing. The chin is recovering nicely.

Was there anything else in the hair ball or was it all hair? I've read that hair balls are usually caused by an existing impaction.

Alice Kline was the person that was our chinchilla vet expert. She had a large herd of animals herself and spent years and years studying them. She performed thousands of necropsy over the years and said at a seminar that she had never once found a hairball.

If this chin had a hairball, I would guess it was caused by something else.
