Is the horse bedding just pine pellets? Does it smell like pine?
They don't have an odor (to me) and say they are pine. They're the Guardian brand. They expand quite a bit, the first time I made the mistake of filling the cages. Now I just cover the back part or the pee corner, it grows and becomes sawdust consistency by the end of the week.

Don't know about using the granular as litter, I put 1/2c in each cage the first time and they peed in it and my white violet continued to roll in it. He was pretty gross after a week. The amount it would take to fill a pan it would be more costly than traditional shavings/pellets. I know some ranchers used fuller's earth for awhile back in the 50's.

That sounds like a lot of work Chantel! I love my watering system though I still have to fill and wash buckets regularly. I hooked mine up to support eight cages per jug, keeps them from flooding my barn but it's more work to clean and keep them up.
