Hi all,

How concerned should I be about a chinchilla finding and eating a penny sized orange peel? It was a cutie orange so the skin was not thick but concerned with the acidity. No actual orange was eating.

Just wanting to make sure. Taking her to the vet for check ups stresses her out immensely so I want to make sure it’s worth taking her. Will start tracking poops and demeanor.

Thank you in advance!

Wellp, I'm no chin specialist but, as soon as I know orange is not poisonous to chinnies (but as you sayd it is too acidic and has many minerals) the good par is that it was a dryed peel, no water is a plus. Frthermore it is not like it ate a whole orange, think of it as a treat, it is somehow sweet so yeah, I personally think you should not be too worry about it.
The worst thing that can happend is a little diarrhea. Try not to give treats this week and make sure he/she eats plenty of pellets and hay.

The chin should be fine, just keep a close eye on her for the next 24 hours or so. If she stops eating, pooping, or is acting off, a vet visit is needed. The acidity in it is not going to hurt her, I would be more worried about any chemicals that might be on the peel unless you washed it or a potential blockage if she can't digest and/or pass it.
