I've never done it myself, but you would need some tool that is capable of cutting metal, as well as something to smooth the edges down. Here's a link to the company that sells metal pans with the cut out. The current price is$32.75. http://www.bassequipment.com/Cages/Ferret+Pans/default.aspx

Where are you located? I have a pan with the cut-out that I use on the bottom with a tile under it as I have all 3 sections split - we could do a trade if you were close to me.

Are you just needing the plastic pan or the metal bar separator too?
I have a plastic pan with the cut out that I am not using. I took the center out and use the cage without the separation.
I would bet midwest also sells them on their website and maybe ebay.
