Ok I am looking to get a heat lamp because my room gets slightly cold at nights but I'm scared that the heat lamp will get to hot. This may sound stupid but how do I know that it won't get to hot and keep track of the temperature?

This is what smhufflepuff said...

I have a few different CHE's.

The ones I prefer are these:

They seem to last a bit longer and spread the heat better than the others. I use both the 100w and 150w (I have two cages - one of which uses just one dome lamp, CHE, and thermostat; the other cage uses two domes and CHE's plus one thermostat).

The other ones I'll use are more for convenience factor:

They work just fine, though don't seem to last quite as long and they're more expensive. There's a PetCo on my way home and I can just stop and pick some up from there as needed, so I'm paying more for the convenience of being able to do that then actually preferring the product.

You're absolutely right -- if you just have the CHE and the lamp, then you do run a risk of overheating because there's nothing to regulate the temp. The other piece you need is a thermostat controller (not to be confused with a rheostat).

Take a look at these as possibilities:
Zilla -- http://www.petco.com/product/108340/Zilla-Temperature-Controllers.aspx
and Big Apple Herp -- http://www.bigappleherp.com/BAH-1000-Thermostat

I'm using a couple of the Zilla's right now -- a 1000w and a 500w. I also have the Big Apple one (though I have the older model that's not pictured) that I use on vacations and hang on to as a back-up for when one of the Zilla's dies. They don't die often - it's happened once in the past 6 years... but it was at an inconvenient time and I don't want to get caught without a back-up again!
