Less than a dozen C. Lanigera individuals were brought into
California by Mr. M. F. Chapman in 1923, these animals being
the sole progenitors of the estimated half million or more
chinchillas now in this country. A few additional C. Lanigera
have been imported from South America from time to time,
as well as small numbers of the larger C. brevicaudata. The
two species will hybridize; the hybrid males are reported to
be completely sterile, while the females reproduce when backcrossed
to either parental type. Those well acquainted with
chinchilla breeding on the North American continent state
that by far the major portion of animals throughout the
country are representatives of the lanigera species.

I was wondering about this recently. Could you elaborate on this claim? Does this confirm that most domesticated chinchillas are of the lanigera species? What about the hybrids? I heard that they were becoming so entertwined that the hybrid would be called chinchilla chinchilla?

According to the IUCN Red List C. brevicaudata IS C. chinchilla. I inferred that the species name was changed, but it's all very confusing to me and I'm not sure about it.
