There is a play pen at petco for hamsters/ferrets for like $49. I was wondering if it was safe for a hedgie.

Yep, I use that for my hedgies, did it come with a cover? The cover works well as a bottom if you use it outside so they can't dig under it to escape.

I am also getting a fleece liner from target it is a Jungle theme one and I think it is 15.99 each. But it is so cute

You can use a fitted sheet as a cover or bottom as well.

i use a plastic kiddie pool as a play pen for Lulu. empty of course! lol

Or you could probably put a playpen IN a kiddie pool, then there would be no leakage...

If you want to try something a little different and costs less. Try some poly cubes. They look like the cubes used on C&C cages, but are solid sided. You can make a pen as big or as small as you want with them. I like them for play pens.
